I was stationed there twice and retired from “Relaxin’ Jackson” as well.
As a preface, one of the landmarks of Fort Jackson is a water tank on top of, well, Tank Hill.
Anyway. I was getting my haircut on base by the same barber who cut my dad's hair 20 years earlier.Dad had passed about a year earlier.
An old retiree come in, took a number and sat down. The barber looked over at him and said hey Master Sergeant, you know how you always said you were here when there was a Lister bag up on Tank Hill? This young Major's daddy hung the Lister bag! Hell, he was here when there was a bucket and ladle!
That brought out a laugh from everyone. The old Sergeant asked who my dad was and the barber said CSM Gamecock. The old retiree got up, walked over and offered his hand and said "Major, your daddy was a damn fine soldier." I thanked him and was a bit choked up for the rest of my trim.
Our thanks to both you and your Dad for your service to our country.
