~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Fort Jackson, South Carolina

Fort Jackson is a United States Army installation, which TRADOC operates on for Basic Combat Training (BCT), and is located within the city of Columbia, South Carolina. This installation is named for Andrew Jackson, a United States Army General and seventh President of the United States of America (1829–1837) who was born in the border region of North and South Carolina.

Fort Jackson is the largest and most active initial entry training center in the U.S. Army, training 50 percent of all soldiers and 60 percent of the women entering the Army each year. Providing the Army with new soldiers is the post's primary mission.

35,000 potential soldiers attend basic training and 8,000 advanced individual training soldiers train at Fort Jackson annually. Soldiers who have trained or worked at Fort Jackson live by the base's motto, "Victory Starts Here." The training is provided by the 165th, and 193rd Infantry Brigades Monday through Sunday for a ten-week period.

The post has other missions as well. While some military installations have experienced downsizing and closure in past years, Fort Jackson has added several new schools and training institutions since 1995 including the U.S. Army Soldier Support Institute, the Department of Defense Chaplain Center and School, and the National Center for Credibility Assessment, part of the Defense Intelligence Agency.

In 2007 the Army consolidated all of its training facilities for drill sergeants at Fort Jackson, and in 2009 Command Sergeant Major Teresa King became the first woman to head what is now the sole drill sergeant school for the U.S. Army.

Fort Jackson encompasses more than 52,000 acres of land, including 100 ranges and field training sites and more than 1,000 buildings. Soldiers, civilians, retirees and family members make up the Fort Jackson community that continues to grow in numbers and facilities.

An additional 10,000 soldiers attend courses at the Soldier Support Institute, Chaplain Center and School and Drill Sergeant School annually. 12,000 military families make Fort Jackson their home. Close to 3,500 civilians are employed at Fort Jackson and 46,000-plus retirees and their families receive services from this base.

LOL! I just pay more attention to the radar to see what’s coming down the pike rain-wise and enjoy the wind map to see where the fronts are.
If your weatherman is like ours, can’t rely on him a whole lot.

I know what you’re dealing with quite well. It sounds like typical TN weather. Fronts come through and the wind can get crazy. I enjoy it except when they come through during winter. The wind can cut right through ya then. BRRRR!!!

We have a nice stiff breeze here tonight that makes our 70 degrees feel nippy. It looks like the rain’s stopped for the night at least. We’re supposed to get more tomorrow and I’m hoping for a thunderstorm close enough for a decent “light show”. LOL

Did you and Gizmo have a good weekend? The weather still cool enough to have him running circles around you? :-)

Thanks everybody. It does feel a bit more comfortable than it has been. I was actually able to control Gizmo from running off at Waurika Lake yesterday.

Yay for being able to control Gizmo! Is that a first or have you been lucky before? He does sound like he can be a handful. LOL

He does look like he has a bit of “imp” in him.
He’ll keep you in shape trying to keep up with him when he’s wound up. LOL

Howdy, EGC! (((hugs)))

All is well here. Pretty, sunny and somewhat warmer today, but a cool front is supposed to roll in tonight sometime. Has it already arrived there?

Hope you and Giz have a fun time at the lake today!...and PIE! :)

Goooood mornin', Early Birds!
Well, it's not early, but....
It is what it is. LOL!
I took a pill to calm mosquito-bite itching.
...and slept nearly 11 hours!
That's unheard of for me!
Guess I'll use those things sparingly!
Hope all y'all have a Terrific Tuesday!
Are you having pretty weather?
Hope so!
((((hugs))))
