Madison officials believe six people were taken into custody Friday by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in a targeted effort in the city.
The arrests came as a surprise to city and police officials and few details are known about the situation. Mayor Paul Soglin reaffirmed at a Friday news conference that ICEs actions are contrary to city policy.
We want to find out everyone who was taken by ICE, so we can make contact with them and do our best job to ensure that their rights are protected, Soglin said. Thats the first and highest priority.
Ald. Shiva Bidar, District 5, said she believes the arrests were based on a list that ICE keeps, but she emphasized the encounter was not a wide-sweeping round-up.
We do not want to send a message that there are massive raids in our city, Bidar said. Our community is certainly on edge already.
Madison Police Chief Mike Koval said the arrests took place at multiple workplaces and that he was unaware that ICE would be in Madison. It is not known who was arrested, what charges the individuals face or where they are being detained.
Soglin said there is no indication that the MPD is interested in the individuals who were arrested by ICE.
Koval said typically ICE officials contact Assistant Chief of Police Randy Gaber the day of or the day before immigration enforcement officers will be in Madison. In this case, no one contacted the police.
Nothing has changed in terms of the MPD response, Koval said. We are not going to assist in what I call those deportation issues.
Centro Hispano Director Karen Menendez Coller urged anyone who is connected to someone arrested by ICE to call Dane County immigration affairs specialist Fabiola Hamdan at 608-242-6260 to be connected with immigration legal services.
Were devastated, Menendez Coller said. We always are, but weve come to expect the worst and the city is ready and prepared to defend against anything.
Council President Samba Baldeh reiterated the citys commitment to protecting its residents, while saying that it is sometimes impossible just because we are also part of a state and a country.
This is really a serious situation, Baldeh said.
It is against policy to let ICE arrest illegals which is their job. Got it.

So this makes it ‘common sense’ why the ICE raid was a ‘surprise’ & the Police Chief was told nothing prior. Good for ICE.
Precisely.
Tee hee. ICE doesn’t have to ask the locals’ permission. Good. More raids need to be done without holding presser ahead of time. Illegals have one right and that’s the right to be deported.
I’d be more impressed if there were a few more zeros added to that little bitty number 6.
That SON OF A BITCH SOGLIN is still alive, let alone mayor?
I remember that bilious bastard during the riots of the 60s when I was in engineering school at Wisconsin. Someone should have taken out the trash then!
Madison, what the hell has happened to you? In the 50s, it was listed in Life Magazine as the best city in which to live. Now, it is nothing but an urban cess pool!
It’s a gorgeous location, though due to all of their ‘Environmental Rules’ the lakes are a mess and pretty much unusable unless you or your pets want to DIE from Green Algae infections.
Socialists destroy everything they touch.
We moved to a suburb of Madistan when I was 10. That was the summer the radicals bombed Sterling Hall. Dad took us girls down there as an object lesson of how awful Socialists are and how NOT to be one when you grow up.
Worked for me. Sis? Not so much...
That’s The Ticket!
Harboring Fugitives.
Better put s'more ICE on that, Paul
Oops! ICE forgot to pick up the city council members on their way out of town!

Is that wretched 60’s hippie prick still around? Berkeley midwest.

TS Mikey.
“In this case, no one contacted the police.”
Of course not you dipshit...ICE doesn’t want them tipped off...capisci?
I love the smell of ICE raids in the morning, especially in sanctuary cities! :^)
