California High-Speed Rail Proposes Controversial Burbank-to-Palmdale Route

The California High Speed Rail Authority (CHSRA) surprised local communities on Wednesday by proposing a controversial Burbank-to-Palmdale route featuring above-ground tracks. The Los Angeles Times reported that the proposed 38-mile track alignment will cross the San Gabriel Mountains via a series of at grade sections and five separate tunnels.

The bullet train’s original route, offered in support of the SB 1856 bond measure passed by the California Legislature in 2000, proposed to follow the Interstate 5 Freeway and tunnel under the 4,144 ft-Tejon Pass to link Los Angeles and Bakersfield.

There is already a metro style rail going to Palmdale/Lancaster from the south. Prolly not a whole lot slower than the high speed train.

If they want to avoid the steep grade up to Lebec from Bakersfield and then down to Castaic, they are going to have to tunnel about 25 miles!

I’m in Bakersfield, my brother San Diego. About 15 years ago(?) we met in Lancaster for a funeral. He took that train. I don’t remember whether it was and is slow.

I drove to Burbank and took that train to a NASCAR race in Ontario. It was super slow.
