Victor Davis Hanson: Are we on the verge of civil war?

Americans keep dividing into two hostile camps.

It seems the country is back to 1860 on the eve of the Civil War, rather than in 2018, during the greatest age of affluence, leisure and freedom in the history of civilization.

The ancient historian Thucydides called the civil discord that tore apart the fifth-century B.C. Greek city-states “stasis.” He saw stasis as a bitter civil war between the revolutionary masses and the traditionalist middle and upper classes.

Something like that ancient divide is now infecting every aspect of American life.

Americans increasingly are either proud of past U.S. traditions, ongoing reform and current American exceptionalism, or they insist that the country was hopelessly flawed at its birth and must be radically reinvented to rectify its original sins.

No sphere of life is immune from the subsequent politicization: Not movies, television, professional sports, late-night comedy or colleges. Even hurricanes are typically leveraged to advance political agendas.

Let one side draw the boundaries and let the other side have their choice of which “half” they want.

Some states are overwhelmingly red. Others, like my native Florida are red but not by much. However, of Florida’s 67 counties, all you have to do is lop off 3 of them.....ie Miami.....and the state tilts massively red rather than just a little red.

Illinois minus Chicago, is a red state. Ditto Minnesota minus Minneapolis, Virginia minus Occupied Northern Virginia, Colorado minus Denver, Washington minus Seattle, Oregon minus Portland (and Eugene), hell, New York minus NYC.

Some states are just rotten to the core and beyond redemption - Massachusetts, Hawaii, Vermont, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Maryland, New Jersey.

Other states have large enclaves in each camp and the state should just be broken in two - California, maybe Pennsylvania.

“Or their bundlings..tv, phone and internet.

Power grid (which we mostly control) would take care of that.”

With all due respect, do people here ever actually read what civil wars are and how they work?

Duuuuuuuuur we can just block the highways, and cut off cell phones, and they will surrender in a week. We has all the guns!!!

You guys really overestimate yourselves and seriously underestimate the left.

The only problem with secession is that as soon as a state secedes, some other country will move in and take it over. Take California for example...Mexico would love to flood California with Mexicans and lay claim to its ports and real estate. China also would love to move in.

Yet they couldn't even defeat a bunch of Afghans using stone age technology.

They could have, easily, IF they were willing to be absolutely ruthless. The US Army faced a similar enemy during the Indian Wars of the 19th Century, and defeated them.

Do not assume that the "powers that be" will not be willing to be ruthless against US, if their grip on power is threatened.

These guys literally think this is how it will go:

They “block” highways into “big cities”.

The cut power to those cities.

They pose on top of trucks with guns.

The other side is completely made up of gay dudes, and blue-haired feminists, whom will fall prostate at the sight of fire arms.

In one month everyone on their side is starving and giving up.

***Apparently no one dies or any city is turned into Sarajevo 2***

Everyone goes back to normal life by Christmas. The end.

Crips and Bloods are going to have enough trouble working together, let alone working for suburban Planned Parenthood or ACLU types.

They may be willing to get paid in order to go after specific "troublesome" individuals.

I have to admire your optimism, even though I find it utterly without merit.

So what are you saying that the American people don’t have the guts or the energy to stand up to a bunch of socialists? I have a lot more faith in the American people than you do. Civil War is an ugly violent thing, people die people starve and disease runs rampant. Most sane people do not want to go down that road but if they have to they will.
If it comes to that, Civil War will be like a fire storm ripping across the country. And I do think that the Democrats have not thought this through, they have positioned themselves to win politically year after year but not an actual Civil War.

We are idiots! We will never learn!

In the 1980’s Reagan gave us the tools to fight a civil war. It doesn’t have to be with guns or other weapons. Conservatives hold the most powerful weapon in the world and yet are scared to death to use it. The weapon has been used time and time again, yet when the opportunity presents itself, more often than not we hide. Sure, we talk a good game but when it comes time to step to the plate, more often than not we go back into the dugout.

Trump took up Reagan’s mantle and is quietly suggesting what we should do. We hear but aren’t listening.

This is a very easy war to win and we can do it in less than two years. And we can do it without picking up a weapon. We have seen it work so many times, yet we still don’t get it.

How to win? Pick a publicly held company, which has recently moved to the left. Look at their 10k and other annual statements to see who owns their stock and the percentages. Look at their subsidiaries and which of them are financially fragile. Short the stock.

Now, target the company using Alinsky’s playbook. Boycott their products, their personnel, their customers. I call it the reverse ChikFilA strategy.

You see, if liberals aren’t rich, they are poor. The middle class are the true consumers of goods. Our purchasing power goes a long way and it is poo poo’d by wealthy liberals. Stop buying their product, protest during their biggest selling period and pretty soon, people are divesting themselves from the stock.

In the end, people lose confidence in the stock, the price goes down and as an added bonus, we make a windfall on selling the stock short.

That’s how you win wars.

I don’t see it. The others who might entertain such ideas are an ocean away and lack the strength. I would assume both sides in any divorce would retain nuclear weapons. There are plenty of them around.

When the CW2 begins i hope the other side keeps in mind that they reside in mostly gun free zones.

This alone might explain why so many folk about which side has the guns and ammmo. It will be a war between the largest urban cities and the rest of America. I don't need to list those cities you get the point, but those cities might also be the ones hosting the FAKE news networks. The war - when it starts - must first take out these spreaders of FAKE NEWS outlets.

Yes indeed, in large vulnerable cities that could not last a week without food deliveries from Red territories...without the red territory electric grid and oil and gas deliveries.

The civil war would be over within a week for most blue counties.

Maybe its time for a massive march on DC by Trumpsters.

Most are at their jobs during the day. The left subsides on gumbmint handouts and has all day to run to the district of corruption when Soros snaps his fingers and opens his gazillion dollar wallet.

Civil war can be avoided if the country would simply come to an agreement on splitting. It can’t survive as a 50-state entity anymore.

And that divorce will only work if leftists move to leftist states and normals move to right leaning states. There's the rub. A lot of people are too old to move or they like their piece of land where they live and retired. Might have to give them an exception as long as they keep their politics to themselves and they understand they will be surrounded by those who strongly disagree with them.

Actually we might all have to leave work and do this. It may be our last, best chance to avoid bloodshed. Most of these puffed-up deep state types are actually p*ssies. If five million angry Americans show up in the streets of D.C. they are liable to get cold feet and rethink their plans.

The Taliban has and had Tanks, ak-47’s, IED’s, RPG’s, etc., etc. That is not “stone age.”

We are not going to be Venezuela as the leftists desire.
