In a recent interview with the Sun, Sheriff Joe Lombardo said he loses sleep wondering if were doing everything possible to protect our children, protect our community.
Theres no reason to doubt the sincerity of that comment. Lombardo clearly takes his responsibility to protect and serve the people of Southern Nevada seriously, as he showed most vividly during the minutes, days and weeks after the Oct. 1 shooting.
But when asked later in the interview whether hed support legislation to increase gun safety in Nevada, Lombardo demurred. He declined to give support for broad measures bans on sales of assault rifles and high-capacity magazines, for instance and said hed have to look at specific bills to decide whether to back them.
His caution isnt unreasonable, but heres hoping that if and when pragmatic gun legislation comes to the table in the upcoming legislative session, Lombardo puts his full weight behind it.
Lets be clear: Unless Nevadans adopt laws to help curb the nations epidemic of gun violence, were not doing everything possible to protect our kids or anybody else

They do love their thesaurus. Reasonable...now pragmatic. But what does pragmatic mean? Practical. Are laws redundant in letter and spirit practical? Are laws that infringe on the rights of the law-abiding practical? Is any law that will be ignored by criminals practical in any way?

Let's rephrase the old saw: 'protecting children' is the last refuge of a scoundrel. And how, exactly, will one laws in one state affect conditions in 49 other states? Nonsensical. But then the gun control types always are.
And I guess it never occurs to these people that there was a time not long ago when firearms laws were quite casual in most areas of North America and the United Kingdom and that that was accompanied by considerably lower crime and violence rates. Wasn’t that reasonable?
Democrats run the NV legislature - they took it over in 2016.
NV is well on the way to being Californicated.
How about upholding the constitution and letting citizens protect themselves....
Gummint agent + gummint agent’s girlfriend + gummint $$$$$ + mystery muslim top-floors “hotel” + LOTS ‘n LOTS of GOVERNMENT GUNS + about a ton of ammo + lots MORE people wounded and DEAD.......
equals.............
We gotta take those ‘GUN’ thingys out of the hands of you common people ASAP!!
You had mostly intact families at that time. Nowadays it is rampant to have broken families that let the kids do whatever they want. Paddock was a large exception in the grand scheme, but all but a few kids who commit mass murder were raised by single parents and/or experienced divorce. However, it’s politically incorrect to ever mention that fact.
I support the most reasonable of all gun policies - the Second Amendment.
did that guy in the hotel with the busted windows buy all of those guns in Nevada?
Yes, legally.
Obama + Eric Holder + Obamunist DOJ + Obamunist FBI = forced gun sales to narcoterrorists in Mexico that killed thousands in Mexico and some Americans.
I see an article that says he bought the guns in 2 states.
California and Nevada
Why hasn’t he resigned? The massacre debacle in the spring should have led him to resign.
***’protecting children’ is the last refuge of a scoundrel.***
Sounds like Bill Clinton who ended so many demands for unconstitutional laws with the words..”...to protect our children!”
Nevada is NOT Chicago or Baltimore or other violent cities.
MOST of the state is very rural. We use those guns in many ways-—not to mow people down who are at a concert outdoors.
