SANTA FE The New Mexico Supreme Court today blocked Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver from bringing back straight party voting for the November general election, ruling the secretary of state does not have the authority to unilaterally make the policy change.
The unanimous decision, which was handed down after more than an hour of deliberations, makes it clear that only the Legislature can reinstate straight party voting, which allows voters to vote for a major partys entire slate of candidates by filling in an oval at the top of the ballot.
This power is theirs alone, and the Legislature has indicated its intent to thoroughly regulate how ballots appear, Chief Justice Judith Nakamura said while handing down the decision.
Toulouse Oliver, a Democrat who is running for re-election this year to a four-year term as secretary of state, has made no secret of her support for straight party voting and announced late last month just over two months before Election Day that she was bringing it back for the Nov. 6 election.

How did New Mexico become a Democrat stronghold? Purely through illegal aliens?
Thanks for the good news!
These judges know that NM voters are such staunch Democrats that they will vote the straight party without the convenience of a master oval at the top of the ballot.
What aboit gay party voting?
They followed rational thinking?? Who are these folks and where did they place the bodies of the real judges?? LOL
Change in demographics as rural conservative Democrats replaced by more "progressive," mostly Hispanic, Democrats in liberal strongholds of first Santa Fe and now ABQ.
In Santa Fe the former mayor and several elected officials in local races are gay. The call SF San Francisco east.
Good news in NM as State Supremes shoot down edict by Dem Sec of State.

Well I can tell you that Santa Fe is Berkeley, CA without the Bay. My wife’s nutball, obese, foul-mouthed cousin and her f*cked up retired Phych Professor live there, and they fit right in just like when they were in CT. Beautiful country though and it’s fun to go to Madrid and see the town where they filmed “Wild Hogs.”

Because Mexico.
I didnt expect that either. The courts in NM are usually aiding corruption.
There's a small town in Northern New Mexico called Chama. It's north of Tierra Amarilla* where there was a land revolt back in 1967. It's mainly a tourist town (but not like Durango, CO) with a heritage railroad, fishing, camping, etc. in the summer, hunting in the fall and winter cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. There are signs all over the place for Steve Pearce (R) for governor.
The rail yards (extending about 1/2 mile long alongside the main street) are not fenced; anyone can walk anywhere on the property at any time and see dozens of restored (and un-restored) freight and passenger cars and old buildings. Yet there is not a trace of graffiti anywhere and vandalism is rare. Only deer and the occasional elk are seen in the yard at night. Many of the locals speak Spanish among themselves but converse in English with the tourists. These are mostly poor people but they have a deep-rooted sense of pride in their heritage and don't take newer, mostly illegal, immigrants from Mexico lightly. Newcomers with crime on their minds don't linger long in the town as the locals take care of any problem themselves.
*The Alianza Federal de Mercedes, led by Reies Tijerina, raided the Rio Arriba County Courthouse in 1967. Attempting to make a citizen's arrest of the district attorney "to bring attention to the unscrupulous means by which government and Anglo settlers had usurped Hispanic land grant properties", an armed struggle in the courthouse ensued resulting in Tijerina and his group fleeing to the south with two prisoners as hostages. Eulogio Salazar, a prison guard, was shot and Daniel Rivera, a sheriff's deputy, was badly injured. The National Guard, FBI and New Mexico State Police successfully pursued Tijerina, who was sentenced to less than three years. A very faded sign on the highway still has the words "Land or Death" in Spanish.

What a lawless democrat bitch! The court should have needed 30 seconds of deliberation, not an hour!
