This is the original melody. It was the theme song of London's Anacreontic Society, a drinking club. There were also gentlemen's clubs like the Wig Club and the Hellfire Society, but we don't mention their activities in front of the fairer sex.

Its subject matter is a debate between Bacchus and Anacreon, and it ran for an interminable 12 verses. This is a mercifully cut down version. You can imagine the members chafing at hearing this song when they could be imbibing.

It's in 3/4 minuet tempo -- one-and-two-and-three-and- -- and our modern version removes the weak beats, dotting the strong beats. The fourths were sharpened for our modern version.

"To Anacreon in Heaven"

Lord. Sounded like they crammed in extra notes to take care of too many words. LOL!

I like our version WAY better!

That’s a great version of “To Anachreon in Heaven.” The harpsichord accompaniment is very appropriate.

Well, that was certainly different. LOL
Who’s a-thunk the melody for the Star Spangled Banner would have come from a drinking club?
