Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is "screwing" over his Democratic colleagues by keeping them in session this October and therefore keeping them off the campaign trail, according to Politico's Burgess Everett.
"Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is planning to keep the chamber in session for a significant portion of October if not four entire weeks, costing Democrats key campaign trail days and allowing the Senate to continue its work into the fall, according to five Republican officials," Everett writes .
Yet, Republicans say two weeks is plenty of time for their Democratic colleagues to make their case to voters.
News: McConnell still planning to keep the Senate in session much or all of October ahead of the midterms. Will cost Democratic senators key campaign days -- and GOP will confirm even more judges https://www.politico.com/story/2018/09/11/senate-democrats-mcconnell-midterms-2018-815705
This is important for two reasons: There are far more Senate Democrats at risk of losing than Republicans, so it's politically smart for GOP to keep the Senate in. "They dont need more than a couple of weeks to campaign," Sen. Burr says of his vulnerable (mostly Dem) colleagues
McConnell compared the Senate races to a knife fight in an alley on Tuesday, so clearly the elections are on his mind. But, judging by his remarks last week, his hardline stance on Senate work also has to do with judicial appointments.
"Were going to clear the deck of all the circuit judges, an eager McConnell told radio host Hugh Hewitt.
Twenty-four appellate court judges had already been confirmed by July, a record for the end of a president's second year in office. Two more were added to that list last month.
Everett also ties the judicial confirmation to the midterms, noting that "If Democrats can pull off an upset win and take back the Senate, they can move to slow Trumps nominations."
Most significantly, Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh is waiting in the wings after his four days of confirmation hearings. Democrats have tried to disqualify him on a number of fronts, some suggesting he would not act as a check on the president or that he would overturn Roe v. Wade. On Wednesday, former presidential nominee Hillary Clinton claimed Kavanaugh referred to birth control as "abortion-inducing drugs." Even Washington Post editors put the kibosh on that.
Despite the distractions, Republican leadership is prepared to take a vote by October.
Using their “logic”, he is also screwing the Republican Senators who can’t go out and Campaign, right?
The Turtle Strikes!!!!
McConnell (Yurtle the Turtle) is probably doing this more to keep Trump from making any recess appointments than anything else.
Yep, it works both ways.
McTurtle should put a dozen judges up for a vote every day.
I had a boss like that once. Seemed to think we should come to work every day and actually earn our pay. Man, I hate guys like that.
Libs are just mad because they didn’t think of it when they were in power.
The only ones that will hurt would be Heller in Nevada and, maybe, Cruz in Texas. Those are the only two Republicans who are in anything close to tight races.
McConnell can keep the Senate in session. That doesn't mean that the Democrats will show up for every vote or hearing. They'll get their campaigning in anyway.
Ain’t it the truth, bosses seem to be that way. :^)
I suspect that, when pols, especially dems, use the word “work”, they are re-defining the term. Everyday Americans actually work; pols, not so sure. Aides, definitely.
I find it absolutely appalling that ANYONE in his right mind could vote for ORourke. The Dems have scoured their ranks for youngish and pretty Ken Dolls to run.......never mind their lack of intelligence. Cruz had better win this one, or Texas will be in play in 2020. (And never discount the level of voter fraud that the Dems are capable of)
Don’t piss off the turtle.
Let's Wrap This Baby Up, Folks!
If they want time to campaign then all they have to do is confirm Kavanaugh.
It’s their own damn fault - only reason they’re being held over is because they’ve been cynically stalling appointments. Now that the bill has come due they’re wanting to dine and dash.
The more time the DC swampthings stay in session, the better. The dems irrational antics are scaring undecided voters. Besides which the ‘pubs will have to pass stuff we care about if they plan to get reelected.
There are far more Democrats up for re-election then Republicans. That gives the Republican challengers a bit of an edge in the campaign since the Democrat incumbent is stuck in DC.
I couldn’t agree more, they’re getting exactly what they deserve.
If the Demons are so upset, tell them to stop screwing around in the Congress.
