Wave heights to 83 ft were measured early this morning by satellite altimeter under the northeast quadrant of Hurricane Florence. These enormous waves are produced by being trapped along with very strong winds moving in the same direction as the storm's motion.
Some strengthening is forecast through Wednesday night, drawing energy from the warm water. Its winds could approach Category 5 strength, which means winds of 157 mph or higher.

Is it a Blue Wave?
His best movie role, he was actually very funny.
I can’t imagine ANY ship surviving that.
Well in June/July ‘94 I was on the Independence as OOD with 100-110 MPH winds (ran between two typhoons and the northern one turned back on us) and we had waves breaking over the bow. Granted it was a 60s carrier and not the current super carrier but still....
XO was ticked because I was grinning ear to ear as he was getting sea sick....granted he was a brown shoe....
The small boys took a ton of damage on that one. At least one Japanese destroyer lost a mast, 2 sonar domes lost.
We lost the rescue helo... set it down too late as winds picked up...was too high to fold the blades back and ended up breaking the stay for the forward blade and completely bent it back over airframe.
Since it’s turning Sough... We’re leaving tomorrow morning.
Sough = South. lol.
Get those babies out of the way of this killer hurricane!
The biggest ever in a tropical storm was "The biggest recorded by a buoy (as of 2011) was 32.3 m (106 ft) high during the 2007 typhoon Krosa near Taiwan.[13] " Wikipedia
The biggest non-storm wave: "An earthquake followed by a landslide in 1958 in Alaskas Lituya Bay generated a wave 100 feet high, the tallest tsunami ever documented. When the wave ran ashore, it snapped trees 1,700 feet upslope. Five deaths were recorded, but property damage was minimal because there were few cities or towns nearby." Simthsonian Institute
It’s 0bama’s economy, and President Trump’s climate, all at the same time, according to Bezos’ NewsLiars at the Washingsnot Pest.
We went on a beach vacation & my nieces were 2 & 3. A hurricane* was approaching - at the time, nowhere near as dangerous as this one & we likely would have been fine, but we evacuated. My brother said putting little kids like that in danger was something he could not do - if it was just himself, then he would stay, but he could not guarantee he could keep them safe if something bad happened. This mother is making a terrible mistake, IMO - I hope she doesn’t pay a severe price for deliberately keeping her small kids in harm’s way. The house means NOTHING when compared to the value of human life.
*This was Hurricane Bob [1991] - just brushed the Outer Banks of NC (where we were vacationing), then went on to become one of the costliest hurricanes in New England history.
Yowsa!
That’s enough to knock Maxine Waters’ James Brown wig clean off!
Do those kids have a dad? If so, where the heck is he?!
Sounds like our Outer Banks timeshares are in jeopardy. But more important, lives may be lost if people choose not to evacuate.
I am sure I saw bigger traversing the Pacific
Somebody ought to tell her about the folks who had decided to have a Hurricane Party in Galveston when Camille hit.
Don't forget the other major factors to contribute to the weather disaster. The Trump tax cuts that only benefitted the rich and the Kavanaugh nomination both helped a lot. Also, don't forget racism!
Don’t hear anything about this on the MSM. The waves could be the least of problems.
I’ve seen 25ft waves up close and personal, but never 80+ft waves, and I don’t want to.
I don’t think the state should have power to take children from their parents except in very rare circumstances. The lady who intends to stay on the each with her 3 little ones qualifies in my opinion, at least for the duration of this storm. If she refuses to have mercy on those kids, and go with them to a potentially safer place, then leave her there to bunk in with the other foolish neighbors. She is severely risking children’s lives for no good reason. She doesn’t have the right to do that in the face of 80+ft waves.
That water could easily get sucked out as the storm approaches only to form tidal wave type activity as it replenishes.
Those kids are scared, and the trauma to them if they survive can last a lifetime.
That lady is in denial.
