Wave heights to 83 ft were measured early this morning by satellite altimeter under the northeast quadrant of Hurricane Florence. These enormous waves are produced by being trapped along with very strong winds moving in the same direction as the storm's motion.
Some strengthening is forecast through Wednesday night, drawing energy from the warm water. Its winds could approach Category 5 strength, which means winds of 157 mph or higher.

This morning’s forecast already has it down to C2 before landfall.
Tomorrow morning’s estimate will more than like be C1 or less at landfall, and I agree with at least part of another prediction, if it makes landfall, it will be in Georgia as a severe rain storm.
Meanwhile, in Central N.C. school is cancelled for the rest of week, even though it’s now a state away.
That 83 feet is sea swell plus wind wave. That actual wave part is probably only 20 -30 feet the rest is swell. Still pretty nasty.
I know that feeling, it's not a good feeling.

the Soviet Navy SSBNs all you had to do was look for them underneath a hurricane. Those bastards...
I worry for them, too.
Maryland has started planting milkweed in the highway medians and banks and there are more of them flitting around than I’ve ever seen.
*However*, there are fewer of them this week than the many I saw weeks ago, so I reckon those guys were already heading south.
No idea how far they can fly in a couple weeks.

Waves that high could break right over a barrier island. If the entire island is under water, strength is not going to matter for anything. There will be no refuge.
Sell that hogwash somewhere else.

I lived through more of them than you have seen on TV, unless you are a east coaster who grew up in the “just inland” swamp areas like me (grew up ON a swamp, thanks). Oh, I know your reply! “I don’t buy for a minute you have seen many storms or lived through them.” To which I will forecast a reply from me, “Don’t care, I know what I know.”
Can’t count the number of times weathergeddon is predicted, then nothing. I have spent money and will continue to spend money on preparing for them. The one time weathergeddon came true for Central NC was Fran, I had no money to prep for that one, but I lived in a dorm. Tornadoes around the dorm, but didn’t hit us. Car came feet from being totaled by a toppled tree.
Many of the other storms, I have helped my parents cleanup their land and property after the floods & winds and knocked over trees. but you ALWAYS get that when a hurricane gets close to shore.It’s not some new phenomenon as media would have you believe.
Besides the forecasts bear out the strength issue.
I may not be correct on the direction of travel, but this thing is going to be the proverbial “big rainstorm”, given the forecast trend, and the damage will focus in the coastal regions, the areas that always get plowed no matter what.
Just to prove me right, the strike date gets further out, the strength on landfall decreases, etc.
Just watch the trends....
But the prep is going to hurt the economy like no other storm in the past decade, because the media put the fear of God in the population.
Even better, the next storm, which could be a man eater, may get improperly ignored (not by me, but at least other central Carolinians or Georgians). I will always live in awe and respect for the storms, but I can also exercise my free speech to go ahead and call this one a flame-out.
Finally, I don’t have much ego about this. If I am wrong, I am wrong. But I am standing by my call, this storm is not what it is being presented as.
Feel free to ridicule me if it wipes out South Carolina or Georgia.

When I was in the LA National Guard before Andrew we passed out Sharpies to everyone that said they were going to stay and instructed them to also mark the entire family.
4:53PM update:
Now projected to be a C1 at landfall in South Carolina.
The hype is government CYA, that will cost millions of dollars in prep money now spent on items that will carry that money out of NC.
On the other hand, making gold from poop, I think I will hit Lowe’s at lunch and see if I can pickup any bargain open box gensets, or other interesting prep items.
