A woman convicted of helping a former street preacher kidnap Elizabeth Smart as a teenager in 2002 from her Salt Lake City bedroom and hold her captive will be freed from prison in a surprise move announced Tuesday by state authorities.
Wanda Barzee, 72, will be released Sept. 19 after the Utah Board of Pardons and Parole determined it had miscalculated the time she previously served in federal custody, board spokesman Greg Johnson said in a news release.
She will be under federal supervision for five years.
Barzee pleaded guilty to kidnapping Smart and helping keep her captive for nine months before Smart was found and rescued.***
It's rare that a kidnapping story like Elizabeth Smart's has a happy ending. ***
The board said previously that Barzee would be released in January 2024 after it denied her an early parole following a hearing that she chose not to attend.\
Smart said in an Instagram post after the hearing that she's not a vindictive person but was worried about Barzee's release after learning she was still carrying a manuscript containing revelations that accomplice Brian David Mitchell said he received from God telling him to kidnap Smart.
She said the manuscript also contains other "disturbing and dangerous ideas." She didn't say how she knows Barzee has the book.
Smart's abduction from her bedroom at knifepoint by a man who came in through an open kitchen window triggered waves of fear among parents around the country.
Smart was found nine months later while walking with Barzee and Mitchell on a street in the suburb of Sandy, Utah, by people who recognized the couple from media reports.
Mitchell is serving a life sentence after being convicted of kidnapping and raping Smart. He and Barzee were married at one point.

This is simply appalling. I guess Utah isnt as Conservative as I thought.
UNBELIEVABLE!
N OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Wow....this is why we need to bring back vigilante justice....this witch should be squashed like a bug.....
One would have thought his fellow inmates would have “handled” the justice.
Knowing what I do about the good people of Utah, this wolf will get a well deserved reception from the locals when he gets out
she is thought to be mentally challenged and an abuse victim herself and she didn' rape anyone.
actual rapists seem to get less time.
No, she didn’t rape anyone, she just facilitated someone else to rape that child. That would be akin to holding someone down while their partner did the raping. What the Hell is wrong with you?
I don’t know firsthand, thank God, but I’ve heard the new breed of inmates are not as tough on monsters as the old days. It’s now an old cliché. Justice must be done outside, not within the system, apparently.
Question: Will this “supervision” or whatever it is mean she will get the same enforcement treatment as illegal aliens, catch and release Obama foreigners, and the overstay the expiration date visa students.
As in : no supervision or enforcement at all?
The male rapist is not being released - his female accomplice (former wife), now 72, is the one being released.
I’m of the opinion that capital punishment ought to be on the table for any crime in which the victim would have been justified in resisting with lethal force. In such cases, it is the criminal who has placed the value of their own life below that of the fruits of the crime.
Ho Lee Fuk. Entirely unacceptable that this woman should EVER see the light of day. Helping someone rape for years???? There should never be any chance of parole. I am sorry to have citizens pay for her heating and food.
I like the way you think.
I’ll bet even Laz wouldn’t hit on THAT!
The article intimates she was the ringleader/brains behind the abduction...so that makes her just as dangerous as the man.
Regardless, it’s not a far leap to believe she will be very vindictive upon her release. I hope the Smart girl is “carrying”.
“Ill bet even Laz wouldnt hit on THAT!”
If he did, friends should intervene...
This is outrageous!
