"As someone who's done hajj and been to makkah many times, the potential to spread disease there is about as bad as it gets. millions of people from all over the world in close proximity sharing food, water, toilets, etc. i totally buy the flu story, as it's a running joke among muslims that hajis (people who do hajj) always come back sick"

The haj is basically a convention for virulent bacteria, parasites and viruses. However, any attempt at quarantine will be seen as Islamophobic.

Let us all not fall asleep with just the association of the increase of contagious diseases to exposure to lots of people from all over the world — We have and are currently experiencing the same kind of increase in diseases in the USA - some of which were almost extinct in the USA - that coincides with the increase of illegal immigration.
