Potentially Dangerous Situation’ on Tappan Zee Delays Opening of New Cuomo Bridge Span
New York Times ^ | 9/8/2018 | Mihir Zaveri

The opening of the second span of the Mario M. Cuomo Bridge on Saturday was delayed after a piece of its predecessor, the old Tappan Zee Bridge, which is parallel to it, became destabilized and threatened to fall, officials said.

The Tappan Zee was being disassembled when the “potentially dangerous situation developed” and a piece of the old bridge became destabilized, Matthew J. Driscoll, the executive director of the New York State Thruway Authority, said in a statement on Saturday.

.................. As the Democratic primary in New York on Thursday approaches, Mr. Cuomo’s opponents seized on the problem with the old bridge, with some suggesting that Mr. Cuomo prematurely announced the opening of the span of the new bridge. The goal had been to fully open the new bridge in 2018, and Mr. Cuomo said last month that he was looking at a mid-September completion.

“A ribbon-cutting ceremony should not have been held if the bridge span was not yet safe,” said Cynthia Nixon, the actor and activist who is challenging Mr. Cuomo in the Democratic primary.

I knew my dumba** Governor would never be able to complete this bridge without a major screwup.

Sorry...for me it's still the Triborough and the Tappan Zee.Neither Kennedy nor Cuomo are worthy of having a sewage treatment plant named after them.

Naming a bridge after a politician who used taxpayers money to build it. Got it.

I have lived my entire life (just shy of 60 years) in the Empire State, and have come to expect nothing less than utter incompetence from Albany; but the demon seed Son Of Mario is the worst Governor I have ever seen. How bad is he? Bad enough to fear Cynthia Nixon! P.S. I was introduced to politics as a young lad watching Bill Buetel, Eyewitness News. My Pops would holler at the TV, and slam his fist onto the table so hard, the silverware often went airborne! What inspired such wrath, you ask? NYC Mayor Lindsay! HA! I realized at nine years old, politics was VERY important - I was then, and will always remain; a conservative-minded Constitutionalist. RIP, pops. MAGA!!

They've already had one colossal screw-up. They had an one of those enormous cranes topple over. I drove over the Tappan Zee right after that and the boom was draped over the side and hanging down. It almost looked like it had melted and dripped over the side. Traffic was backed up for miles just by people gawking at it.

This new bridge will be cursed because of its namesake. Mark my words.

Gee, isn't Tappan an old Indian tribe name.

And isn't it culturally insensitive to remove a bridge, which was named after a bend in the river, which was named after an Indian tribe, and to replace that bridge with a bridge "honoring" some dead white guy?

How racist.

Oh crud.

Seriously, they’re naming it for a person? Like Cuomo?

I thought it was just “the new Tappan Zee”!

We are honoring the father of a governor who is just as arrogant and criminal as son. His campaign add running at nauseum with his lieutenant gov and AG is “we are fighting for women’s rights(abortion) gay rights and immigrant rights”, no mention of the other millions of WORKING families who pay the bills. Nice to be the sh## under your shoes oh arrogant one. No one knows who the republican candidate is or if he or she even exists! Good job republicans! you should run and hide, you should be ashamed!

Seems like the bridge that is unstable and ready to collapse is the one that should be named after Cuomo.

I'm not sure you understand my post.

The 59th Street Bridge, which was also called The Queensboro Bridge, but which NO New Yorker ever called it, not ever, was renamed The Ed Koch Bridge. Nobody, especially not I ( the land, on the Manhattan side, was bought from my great, great grandparents, so, in a way, I've always felt that that was MY bridge ), calls it that!

Perhaps I should have been clearer in my post.
