A Dallas officer faces a manslaughter charge a day after she fatally shot a 26-year-old man whose apartment near downtown she apparently mistook for her own.
(Snip)The victim was identified as Botham Shem Jean, a native of the Caribbean nation of Saint Lucia. A graduate of Harding University in Arkansas, he worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers in Dallas.
(Snip)The officer who shot Jean is a white woman, and Allison Jean said she wondered whether the outcome would have been different if her son hadn't been black.

Still way too many details not reported.
Woman cop, Black woman Police Chief.
Let the fun begin...
She’s an idiot!
I don’t care if they play the race card here, she deserves it for her foolishness (more than likely on drugs or drunk).
That will probably rank as the biggest mistake of her life.
Strange things can happen when you are sleep deprived.
My sympathies for the young man’s family.
It does not look good for the cop here, or the cops.
Second degree murder might be the appropriate charge. No malice before the act, but she shot to kill on little to no provocation.
The whole story stinks to high heaven. I’m trying to figure out in what world is it ok to enter another person’s dwelling and gun them down, then get away with it because you belong to the blue line?
She ought to get the needle IMHO. What did she do that is different from your run of the mill meth-head breaking into a home and murdering homeowners? The badge defense is a cop out (no pun intended).
We don’t know jack yet. The perp might had both malice and motive. Just the malice or the motive. The vic might’ve been a great guy or a bad egg. We’ll see. But unless Mama knew for a fact her son was cleaner than Caesar’s wife, she might want to put away that race card. She may need the good will of the jury pool.
A police officer should know you do not shoot “blind”.
The threat should be real and honestly identified. “Wait until you see the whites of their eyes” is not just a line from a movie.
Adrenalin.....amazing drug!
Going from sleep deprived to 90mph in less than half a second.
Manslaughter is only appropriate if that’s what the prosecutor would have done for any other citizen.
The Dallas Police Chief announced today that the investigation is being turned over to the state police (Texas Rangers).
At best, everybody here is a victim of circumstance.
As of now, there are only two people who know exactly what happened. One is dead and the other is smart enough to get an attorney before she says anything else.
BLAM!!
The coppers are way too quiet about this.
Why wasn’t front door locked? If I lived in an apartment building I would. If it was how did the officer get in? If it wasn’t, shame on victim as well.
I dimly recall a study where supposedly use of force instances go up the more women that are on a police force. Male cops get over protective, female cops can’t intimidate as well into getting someone to comply. The more black men on the force the lower use of force instances, supposedly because of the intimidation factor.
Freegards
It’s true we don’t know much except a man was shot by a cop in his own apartment. But, I didn’t mention race in my post. Not that it isn’t likely to be brought up.
You didn’t. The vic’s mom did. And she likely doesn’t know any more than we do. About the shooting, anyway.
Haven’t got the toxicology reports back yet but it is common for cops to go drinking after shift. Additionally, in Dallas, Houston & Austin, it’s diversity over ability and competence.
Last I heard, they haven’t arrested her yet, when they do, they’ll probably take her right down to the hospital for her blood work.
