AP Exclusive: Franklin’s family says eulogy was offensive

The late Aretha Franklin’s family said Monday that it found an Atlanta pastor’s eulogy delivered at the Queen of Soul’s funeral last week to be offensive and distasteful.

The eulogist, the Rev. Jasper Williams Jr., was criticized for a political address that described children being in a home without a father as “abortion after birth” and said black lives do not matter unless blacks stop killing each other. Franklin’s funeral was on Friday.

“He spoke for 50 minutes and at no time did he properly eulogize her,” said Vaughn Franklin, the late singer’s nephew, who said he was delivering a statement for the family.

Franklin said that his aunt never asked Williams to eulogize her, since she didn’t talk about plans for her own funeral. The family selected Williams because he has spoken at other family memorials in the past, most prominently at the funeral for Franklin’s father, minister and civil rights activist C.L. Franklin, 34 years ago.

Williams has not backed down from anything he said at the funeral, and said he respects the family’s opinion. “I understand it,” he said. “I regret it. But I’m sorry they feel that way.”

Besides a social media uproar, Williams heard resistance at the funeral itself. Singer Stevie Wonder yelled out “black lives matter” after the pastor said, “No, black lives do not matter” during his eulogy.

Williams had minimized the Black Lives Matter movement because of black-on-black crime. “Black lives must not matter until black people start respecting black lives and stop killing ourselves.”

I think Trump’s solution is to get the out-of-control, suffering blacks jobs.

So lamenting the fact that so many brothas and sistahs are being murdered by brothas is offensive? Of course it would be if those claims were untrue. But FBI stats prove, year after year, that they're absolutely true.

On his lamenting the lack of a father in so many black households...true or false? I think we know the answer.I think Aretha's family knows the answer.Has Aretha's family ever considered what so often becomes of a boy...regardless of race...who grows up without a father? And I'm sure it doesn't do a whole lot of good for girls either.

As for his claims regarding the Klan I'm hoping he presents some stats. But no stats are needed for the other two observations. They're out there for everyone to see.

You know, I mostly think that Arianna is an ass, and sometimes she kind of dresses like a tramp, but I feel sorry for her looking at those pictures.

She didn’t deserve that. Bunch of lecherous old men.

Louis Farrakhan, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton (all 3 known to have made antisemitic remarks publicly in their history) plus Bill Clinton all attended the funeral but this speaker upset them?

Attention,Aretha's family:

The Winstons expressed it in a very clear and moving way in 1969.And they did it through music!

Color Him Father (1969)

“In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act.”

Often attributed to Orwell, but no definitive source.

All I get from Aretha’s music after age 30 is a lot of yabba dabba do. I think her work after a few hits was shite.

Read that he did the funeral for Aretha’s father. They knew him. I suspect cowardice.

Mmmmm, I’m tempted to, but no.

Apparently Democrat men have no qualm whatsoever with using their position to get what they want from the women who support them because they have provided consequence free sex.

They can’t even keep it to themselves at a funeral.

Pitiful.

Agreed. This politicization of *everything* is ugly, regardless of which side it comes from.

Granted that this pastor may well feel desperate, given the rate at which blacks are killing other blacks, and he likely has personal connections to that issue, while Meghan McCain has no such life-or-death excuse.

There is an incredible irony here. Multiple “eulogies” at her funeral were entirely to slam Trump. That political rhetoric with no reference to the woman and her 4 children was apparently fine.
Black preacher complains about fatherlessness and black on black murder, issues hurting the black community at a black icon’s funeral - that’s unduly political.

Just as the McCain funeral tour became a political circus (can we hoist the flags to full staff yet?), the family seems to have brought this on themselves. Must be the new cool. Celebrity funerals are all the political rage now.

What in the heck did they expect by not just inviting, but seating political figures in a place of prominence at this gala funeral? Maybe there’s still time to set up a GoFundMe drive in Aretha’s name for Keith Ellison....

So sick of these demented lefties...
