A massive fire has broken out at Brazils National Museum in Rio de Janeiro, engulfing the entire building, just months after the museum marked its 200th anniversary.
The incident began on early Sunday afternoon when a fire erupted in the three-story building. Footage broadcast on Brazilian TV showed that the fire had spread throughout all floors of the building.
It was not immediately known if anyone was injured, but the fire broke out when the museum was closed.

Image reminds me of Bond film, A View To Kill, burning of San Francisco City Hall. That of course needs a good burnin’
I read there were 20 million historical items in that museum.
Gone.
So sad,I love museums——and wandering around by myself.
.
I’m going with arson until it is determined otherwise.
I agree.
If the slavery exhibit burned does that mean slavery never existed?
Egypt wants the British to return the Rosetta stone. It’s safer in London, for now.
no doubt
The way scumlims love to destroy history, I wouldn’t let them get jack.
It is horrible. It make me sad.
What a waste.
was there a bunch of times in the 60’s...school outings and family outings. great place to spend the day.. amazing stuff they had
So sad. Will wait to hear more about sprinkler systems, etc. before thinking about who might have benefited by this fire. Could you grab one or two or even 10 items in the turmoil and sell them on the black market to someone who doesn’t care about the loss of the rest?
Theory without evidence:
Arson to cover up a burglary.
Awful
Truly
Lots of irreplaceable artifacts
Truly a cataclysmic loss
Negroid race from west Africa perhaps
Not very Mongoliodal
Like say Yanomami
For a reference, how would you say this museum compares to, say The Prado, in Madrid?
Brazil is in financial crisis. Arson to cover up illegally sold precious items would not be out of the question. Also, museums have insurance.
“Egypt wants the British to return the Rosetta stone.”

I hope the British tell Egypt to pound sand.
If, God forbid, ISIS or Taliban types ever take over Egypt, they would destroy those historical relics.
Great question, I don’t know.
Amen.
