President Donald Trump defended his muted and widely criticized response to Sen. John McCain’s death, insisting that he properly honored the war hero he once slammed for being a POW, according to a report.
The president infuriated many Americans when he ordered White House flags raised back to full staff the day after the six-term Republican senator died of brain cancer at age 81 on Saturday.
The American Legion, the nation’s largest veterans group, sent a letter asking Trump to keep the flags at half-staff until McCain’s burial – a common practice honoring senators who die in office.
“No, I don’t think I did at all,” Trump said in an interview Thursday with Bloomberg News in the Oval Office when asked if he goofed and missed a chance to unite the country.
“I’ve done everything that they requested and no, I don’t think I have at all,” he added.
Trump also displayed his antipathy toward McCain, with whom he clashed on a host of policy issues, by releasing a terse tweet offering his “deepest sympathies and respect” to the late senator’s family.

“We had our disagreements and they were very strong disagreements,” Trump told Bloomberg on Thursday. “I disagreed with many of the things that I assume he believed in.”
