People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals want to build a 5-foot tombstone where lobsters may have died after a crash on Route 1 in Brunswick, Maine, last week.

According to the Brunswick Police Department several of the crustaceans that a Cozy Harbor Seafood truck was carrying got crushed as a result of the rollover.

The organization sent a letter to the Maine Department of Transportation asking if it could create the roadside memorial where the lobsters lost their lives.

Great! Someone should open a Lobster Roll place right next store.

“Those of us in Eastern New England are accustomed to being served lobsters that were swimming in the Atlantic a few hours earlier.”

This sentence belongs in the northeast.

Or they could use the money to build community gardens that grow plant based proteins and healthy vegetables in food deserts.

I bet we could do this for hours.

Catholics don’t consider lobsters as meat?

As a Catholic, that baffles me too. But ... I think the reasoning is that it's from the ocean. Crustaceans and fish are permitted meals on Fridays during Lent. As for the rest of the year, the "no meat on Fridays" as a sacrifice was lifted years ago as long as a Catholic does some other sort of sacrificial abstinence.

They should build a memorial at their rescue centers since they kill more animals than any other place.

I’d love to see a big pot of melted butter and lemon as a memorial to the lobsters.

This year they Fedx fresh lobsters into Burning Man.

Gotta go where the demand is focused.

Seems like the proposed monument should look more like a tin of Old Bay seasoning.

Agreed. Just make sure the granite marker is far enough away from the road so that it’s not a hazard. 200’ should be OK.

But then I don't have the fun of serving lobster across the street from the "shrine"! I'm certain that I will attract a lot of "mourners" who share my view!

I have my own memorial to dead lobsters. It includes a baptismal font filled with clarified butter, so the departed might be washed and anointed in the Hindu custom before sending them to their final resting place (down my gullet).

Perhaps PETA could establish a ‘living memorial’ outside of every Red Lobster Restaurant.

I’m sure there have been crabs and shrimp that have died by accident between their catch and the dinner plate. If no “memorial” for them, then they are guilty of “shellfishism”!

I was there years ago. The mosquitos were nearly as big as the lobsters. Sounds like great fun!
