Kelli Ward suggested Saturday that the statement issued Friday by U.S. Sen. John McCain's family about ending treatment for brain cancer was intended to hurt her U.S. Senate campaign.
McCain died Saturday hours after her remarks.
Ward, a conservative former state senator from Lake Havasu City, is in a three-way race for the Republican U.S. Senate nomination in Tuesday's Arizona primary.
Ward wrote on Facebook that "I think they wanted to have a particular narrative that they hope is negative to me."
Her comment was made under a Facebook post by one of her campaign staffers, who questioned if it was "just a coincidence" that the McCain family released the statement the same day that Ward was kicking off her campaign bus tour, "or if it was a plan to take media attention off her campaign?"
"I'm not saying it was on purpose but it's quite interesting," Jonathan Williams wrote.
Aaron Borders, the onetime second-vice chairman of a Maricopa County Republican Party group, took screenshots of Ward's remarks on Saturday and condemned her remark on social media, and in an interview with The Arizona Republic.
"It's wildly inappropriate," said Borders, who is supporting Ward's rival, U.S. Rep. Martha McSally, in the GOP race. "It's classless. It's not decent ... it's very narcissistic. It's a narcissist comment to sit there and think that the McCain family made this decision to interfere with your bus tour."

Ward knows she has no chance. McSally is running a brilliant ad against certain Dem opponent Kirsten Sinema that both hurts Sinema and projects the image of an already-nominated candidate. She deserves the nod, and we all have to make sure Sinema is defeated, and soundly.
I did not, and it references the kickoff of Kelly Wards Bus tour, not the end of it. The end of it was on Saturday.
Could this be fake news?
In this campaign, I have seen a lot of things taken out of context by Kelly Ward's opponents, and used against her.
While this might have been a dumb thing to say; it's probably true. That's just how the McCain's roll.
Kelli Ward is as good as they get. Don't let the naysayers sway you. She is solidly conservative. Unfortunately the McCain, Flake, McSally machine is strong. Too strong to overcome I think. Ward got my vote and I'll be sad if she loses but not surprised. Arpaio being in the race almost guaranteed splitting the vote away from Ward enough to insure a McSally victory. At this point we just wait and see but if McSally wins Tuesday and then again in Nov.; I guess we all have to hope she isn't another McCain/Flake clone.
And the beat goes on...

So you are under the impression that political opponents do not try and create narratives to their opponents?
In other words, how does that smear her at all to say that?
Is there not a hotly contested election taking place right now?
I know coordination when I see it and thus thread is part of it.
Truth still can be politically tone deaf at times.
“Lol. She did that herself. Needed no help from anybody else.”
What are you suggesting she did?
She was referring to the media, not the McCain family.
Not the sharpest cactus spine in the state is she?
Obviously on his death bed. She is absolutely right.
I have known Kelli Ward since the day she entered Arizona politics. She is smart. She is also Conservative within a very moderate AZGOP. You are reacting exactly the way they want you to. They are laughing us because conservatives are so predictable. That’s why we lose
Charisma....... that’s the ticket.
Seems like Republicans quite often lose because they say stupid things.
The ads and taking out of context of Kelly Ward are about the worst I have seen in Arizona. Even worse than when she was running against McCain.
With Arpaio in the race, it is clear the McConnell faction is pulling out all stops to make sure McSally wins the primary.
This is the sort of nothingburger the media blows up into some sort of serious infraction. Kelly's comment was a obvious observation of possibilities in a really nasty campaign where she is fighting the Media, the McCain machine, and the McConnell machine all at once.
Unfortunately, Kelly does not have enough of a twitter feed to be able to fight back against the media.
If McSally wins, I will hold my nose and fight for her. I pray she will be better than McCain, but I have my doubts.
Mostly, conservatives lose because there are not enough of them.
Everyone says stupid things. It only becomes headline news when Conservatives do.
SMH.
It maybe true, but she should’ve kept her mouth shut.
This won’t help her.
“Kelli Ward suggested Saturday that the statement issued Friday by U.S. Sen. John McCain’s family about ending treatment for brain cancer was intended to hurt her U.S. Senate campaign.”
What a stupid remark. Sure — McCain timed his death to hurt her campaign. McCain had terminal brain cancer FCOL. It’s all about her.
A candidate has to be able to stand up under pressure without imploding and making lame statements that will come back to haunt them.
“””In this campaign, I have seen a lot of things taken out of context by Kelly Ward’s opponents, and used against her.”””
If it was out of context, then why was Kelli Ward’s comment taken down?
“””Ward’s campaign spokesman, Zachery Henry, did not return a call from The Arizona Republic to discuss her comment. Ward’s online comment appeared to be taken down a short time after.
In a follow-up comment on Facebook, Ward wrote that she prays for McCain “as a man who is suffering” and that “the media” is at fault”””
Let’s just keep talking about it and hurting her chances more. She would be an amazing Senator. She understands health are to the core. She understands the immigration issue to the core. I’m just shaking my head. One more time, YOU DO NO KILL YOUR FRIENDS TO PLACATE YOUR ENEMIES. Has any Democrat gone up against Maxine Waters? Why? BECAUSE SHE IS IN AN ELECTION. And Democrats understand, more than Republicans that nothing is is as important as power.
Let’s all keep in mind that the real enemy is Rat Kirsten Sinema. She must be called out for the leftist P*ssy Hat radical that she is. She claims to “work with both sides” and that’s a bald-faced lie. We have to keep her out of the senate.
Kelli would be a great Trump-supporting senator. Unfortunately, she should have kept quiet for now. If Ducey had been considering appointing her to McCain’s seat, he will never do it now.
