John McCain, the longtime senator and 2008 GOP presidential candidate who refused to leave fellow prisoners of war behind to escape years of torture in Vietnam, and whose maverick streak as Arizona’s senior statesman at times frustrated fellow Republicans and confounded President Donald Trump, has died, his family confirmed in a statement Saturday.

He was 81and had been diagnosed with brain cancer in July 2017.

McCain had decided to discontinue medical treatment for the glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer, his family announced on Aug. 24. He had surpassed expectations for his survival, but "the progress of disease and the inexorable advance of age render their verdict," the statement said.

I certainly hope they don’t politicize his death by appointing either his wife or daughter to his senate seat.

That would be a real slap in the face to the diseased.

Are you familiar with what John McCain did when families of MIA and POW were in Washington trying to find out what happened with their loved ones?

There are a great many of us who are intimately and personally familiar with that...situation.

I don't get to judge; I'll say only RIP McCain.

“if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

I'm pretty sure he has coals of fire on his head.

You didn't mention how he came home from Vietnam and found out his wife was disabled. She was hit by a car while out coming home from an event to raise money for MIAs and POWs.

Instead of being proud of his disabled wife, he dumped her and after an extended period of sowing wild oats he began dating a woman with a family with much money.

McCain has been paying his wife's medicals bills since she was disabled. Let's see if the 2nd Mrs. McCain continues to pay those bills.

“I can’t mourn McCain’s passing, but neither will I celebrate it.”

Well said.

prayers for his family but I will be glad when mentions of him in news etc become infrequent.

I also wonder his last public words? I guess may be hard to know for sure since others may have tweeted etc for him.

Mods, I don’t envy your job, but maybe going through this thread and taking away those bad posts that make FR look like a bunch of people celebrating the death of the man.

Hey mods, I have a better idea; tell the self-appointed hall monitors to stuff a sock in for a few hours while other posters blow off some steam...

John McCain, among others, helped me to see the false delusional republican ‘dream’. For that I am grateful. Let’s bury him and then move on. MAGA.

One percent sounds about right. On the Columbia, there’s an island where the terns nest. They take the detector out there and find thousands of chips in the sand and bird poop.

You know how I know that McCain was no Conservative? All of the Liberals/Democrats/LUNATICS trashing President Trump for making a simple statement and sending his condolences to the family. Which is where they belong.

America, as a whole, has lost nothing.

Thank you for your service and introducing Governor Palin

Well, everyone is saying if you can't say something nice about him, don't say anything at all. You certainly found about the only thing anyone can say nice about him!

“So true. When my mom had liver cancer they increased her morphine and within a couple of days she was gone. The same thing happened to my sister when she had breast cancer. The morphine shuts down the vital organs pretty quickly.”

So sorry for the pain you must have endured losing both your mom and sister to cancer. I lost both my mom and sister to heart disease.
