John McCain, the longtime senator and 2008 GOP presidential candidate who refused to leave fellow prisoners of war behind to escape years of torture in Vietnam, and whose maverick streak as Arizona’s senior statesman at times frustrated fellow Republicans and confounded President Donald Trump, has died, his family confirmed in a statement Saturday.
He was 81and had been diagnosed with brain cancer in July 2017.
McCain had decided to discontinue medical treatment for the glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer, his family announced on Aug. 24. He had surpassed expectations for his survival, but "the progress of disease and the inexorable advance of age render their verdict," the statement said.

President Trump just tweeted his condolences. It did not at all praise Senator McCain. The tweet was very reserved.
Not grieving for the man. His treasonous activities along with many others in the Swamp need to be exposed, but get ready for the sappy, syrupy tributes to him that are totally undeserved!
What he put Sarah and her family through, sorry just can’t forgive him..and you add the phony dossier which he said he did NOT regret passing around, yeah can’t forgive him for that either. Cancer sucks, my Mom had early early stage uterine cancer, thank God they found it early and she had a complete hysterectomy one month ago..would never wish cancer on anyone, its a horrible disease..and brain cancer, the kind McCain had, absolutely brutal..but what he put Sarah through, and the dossier alone..I can forgive but I wont forget
