The GOP will likely hold on to McCain’s seat until 2020
Washington Post ^ | Aug. 24, 2018 | Amber Phillips

It’s now clear that John McCain (R-Ariz.) probably will not return to Washington full-time as a U.S. senator. He’s been home in Arizona since December battling brain cancer, and on Friday he announced he’ll stop treatment for it, saying “the progress of disease and the inexorable advance of age render their verdict.” The statement didn’t indicate how much time McCain has left to live, or whether he will remain in the Senate as his health declines.

Regardless of those factors, the timing of McCain’s announcement makes what was potentially a messy, complicated battle about how to replace him much simpler. When the time comes, the governor of Arizona will appoint a replacement for McCain’s seat, and that person will serve until the next election, which will not be until November 2020.

That means McCain’s replacement in a nearly evenly divided Senate is likely to be a Republican.

A Republican will mean that it is more likely that Republicans retain control of the Senate.

That’s nice, considering the GOP didn’t have it before

If he’s ending treatment and he hasn’t represented the people of Arizona since December... why in God’s name hasn’t he stepped down yet?

Maybe the governor will replace him with a real conservative. One can hope.

If he dies in office the governor appoints his successor without any ties to the family. Stepping down may have had some contingency involved.

A GOP replacement will be made and he doesn’t have to run again until 2020, so what is ‘more likely’ nonsense?

Wheel him over the border into Mexico.

Let him croak in the land of his loyalties and away from the Americans he loathes so much.

One would think he might be using his letter of resignation as a bargaining chip?
Perhaps to appoint his own successor?
If his wife or daughter ends up in the seat, I assume the fix is in...
JMHO

So with McCain’s earthly demise and Flake’s political demise, we pick up two Republican seats.

I can just see Amber Phillips, the Compost “writer”, melting down like a snowflake in Phoenix as she wrote this piece.

Makes me smile just thinking about it!
