Trump changes US policy: 'Conserving oil no longer an economic imperative'

In terms of its effect on the lives of Americans, as well as the economy, the change of U.S. policy announced by the Trump administration last month to almost no media attention is a big deal. Ellen Knickmeyer of the Associated Press picked up on it belatedly:

Conserving oil is no longer an economic imperative for the U.S., the Trump administration declares in a major new policy statement that threatens to undermine decades of government campaigns for gas-thrifty cars and other conservation programs.

My EX B-I-L, a Liberal with a PHD told me we were going to run out of Oil n 50 Years.

When I told him, well, maybe in 500 Years, he was apoplectic.

Communists don’t want to have to wait 500 years
to control all of our lives.

How many times have we been told we passed peak oil only to find billions more untapped resources? And Alaska’s North Slope was supposed to run out years ago. I’m not saying that the supply in inexhaustible and that quick-charging electric vehicles shouldn’t be developed, but we won’t run out in the next 30 years.

Peak Oil Theory has been responsible for the squishiest of moving time targets. This gives great credence to the operation of other mechanisms for oil creation than biological fossils.

Good, then auto manufacturers can stop being “creative” to save weight and increase mpg. Like BMW did with the run flat fiasco eliminating the spare tire and forcing owners to spend $150 more per tire for run flats.

Autos have been forced to run cleaner and use less gas p/mi which is what started the whole fossile fuel riff in the first place.

We've developed a more conservative attitude about burning fossile fuels and it should stick around for another hundred years or so.

There is no longer a neccesity for fuel / oil conservation.

A clear case of the EPA has done its job so it can now pack up and go home .....

Go get a job and go to work.

I thought I read years ago that supposedly “depleted” Oil Fields were refilling (for lack of a better word) and were being used again.

Of course, Fracking has been responsible for reaching Oil Reserves thought out of reach.

Never said the Trump administration. This is an interpretation of the decision to relax CAFE standards, which is senseless NOW that Ford no longer makes cars and Chrysler no longer exists.

I see quite a few of them here and there are charging stations at most of the casinos. So, do the owners have to pay at the charging stations there? I’ll have to look closer.

Yes. We are going deeper or using new processes to free up known oil. AND, some fields are refilling.

I believe there should be balance and judgement in economics. Personal needs and available economic resources guide the decisions of all. It may not be an economic “imperative”, but to a lot of us “regular folk”, with gas in the $2.70 a gallon range, it makes sense on a personal level to conserve some and not just throw money away. I could afford it, but I am not going to go out and buy a Hummer; neither am I going to buy a Smart Car or a $70,000 pick-up truck.
