LOS ANGELES (AP) — A California woman has said she had to drive herself to the hospital and give birth without her husband after he was detained by immigration agents.
Maria del Carmen Venegas said she and her husband, Joel Arrona Lara, were driving to the hospital Wednesday when they stopped for gas in San Bernardino, just east of Los Angeles.

If he was a “migrant”, why was he detained?
Criminals are sometimes arrested. I know it’s shocking, but it happens all the time.

Posting this for a chuckle. I know AP and those who disseminate it are trying to put a sympathetic spin on it, but even SF Chronicle’s readers aren’t fooled (read the comments following the article). Clearly this guy was here illegally and he was being dealt with according to immigration law. Why today’s news editors find that so shocking is beyond me.
Looking forward to the day when “migrant” is properly replaced by “illegal alien” in news copy and headlines.

Likely he didn’t have any legal ID to begin with. Any guy has a wallet on him at all times and that wallet contains legal ID of some sort e.g. a California driver license.
Nope, per the article he is an illegal and has been living as such for 12 years.

She wasn’t even in labor. She was going to the hospital for a “scheduled c-section”. Your tax dollars at work.

Well, that was lousy planning, wasn’t it? Pretty much like the plan to get into the US but I guess that worked out pretty good for 12 years or so. Did they wait until the last minute to pack a bag for the hospital also?
Her excuse was that he was in a rush to get to the hospital so he left behind his identification, whatever it was. Yet I guess one of them had money for the gas. But this was not a woman travailing in labor. It was a scheduled c-section which is typically scheduled days, even weeks in advance, specifically to precede the due date so it doesn’t happen during labor. So, what was the rush?
