In his early days working for Paul Whiteman, Bing was a hard drinker, a brawler and a general badass. He and Bix Beiderbecke would drink until dawn, and then Paul would have to write in his orchestra score, “Wake up Bix.” In the Thirties, Bing settled down to become Der Bingle, America’s smoothest and favorite baritone crooner. But he never became boring. Here Bing lets a tiny bit of his inner badass sneak out while the trumpet sings whorehouse blues. This is a fine recording.
