China Buckles, Sends Trade Delegation to Washington to Seek End of Trade War
Breitbart ^ | 16 Aug 2018 | John Carney

China and the U.S. are set to resume trade talks for the first time since June. A meeting between the two countries, which would be between lower-level officials than earlier talks, would mark a breach in the standoff that has arisen since talks broke down in the spring. U.S. officials have repeatedly said they were open to new talks but insisted that China had walked away rather than offer serious reform.

It still is not clear if China’s delegation will carry with it a reform offer serious enough to stave off the Trump administration’s threat of former tariffs. The U.S. side will be lead by Under Secretary of the Treasury for International Affairs David Malpass.

China is sending a trade envoy to Washington in a renewed effort to end a worsening tariff dispute that has raised worries it will chilal global economic growth.

The delegation led by a deputy commerce minister will visit in late August to discuss “issues of mutual concern,” the Commerce Ministry announced Thursday. It gave no details of a possible agenda.

The two governments are poised to impose a new round of tariff hikes on $16 billion of each other’s goods next week in their worsening conflict over Beijing’s technology policy.

The Commerce Ministry said Beijing “reiterates its opposition to unilateralism and trade protectionism and does not accept any unilateral trade restrictions.”

This month’s meeting would be the first between senior U.S. and Chinese officials since June 3 talks in Beijing between Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and Vice Premier Liu He ended with no settlement.

A billion people without soybeans, or soybeans at inflated prices, through the winter is not a good prospect.

What a shame if the Three Gorges Dam were to suffer a catastrophic breach due to *cough* "shoddy workmanship"...

I was wondering why the price of soybeans started taking off late last night.

Lower taxes.

Fewer regulations.

Trump is way ahead of you.

Part of the dance, I'd expect the Chinese to try a lowball offer, because they think our POTUS needs any old kind of deal going into the midterms. Thanks mandaladon.

Yeah - any others like the Bushes, Clinton, Obama would leap all over the first bone thrown at them, then rush to the media to crow about the 'wonderful agreement we have made with our Asian trading partners'. That don't work with The Donald - he gets the deal he needs, or they can get their asses back on that plane. Am not expecting much of anything at this time - it's gonna be a process, not gonna be solved with a one-and-done meeting, EVER.

Cute - but that doesn’t answer my question.

Your understanding of the issue leaves much to be desired. So nice try, but not everyone is as simple minded as you.

"Balance sheets are reckoned quarterly, long term plans be damned."

I totally agree. Once they regained possession of the money-pot Hong Kong, I knew then they'd begin to see the value of capitalism. China's government is still based on a central dictatorship, but they have come to realize the value of free enterprise.

Most people would be amazed at how many free market companies exist there now in what's still a communist nation on paper. IIRC, they have the second largest gambling industry in the world. They have countless billionaires. Their tourism has exploded, also.

The above is Pres. Trump territory of which he excels in. His so-called tariff war with China is a huge concern to their current and future prosperity and that's why they have blinked. My prediction: Within a year they will yield to almost every Trump demand, if not sooner.

I've been saying for years that we need a successful businessman in the WH rather then flip-flopping mealy-mouth bowing politicians. Now if we could replace the lawyers in Congress with business persons, the entire World would benefit. Imagine the new pro-business laws put in place by such people and the ripple effect around the planet.

Last thought: I give Pres. Nixon kudos for opening China to the World. However, Pres. Trump will go down in history as re-initiating the "old (successful) world order" as so many nations have copied by our example.

Except their own. China’s unilateralism and trade protectionism and unilateral trade restrictions are fine...because China...but bad old America better not do what China does!

“A billion people without soybeans, or soybeans at inflated prices, through the winter is not a good prospect.”

Trump sold the soybeans to Europe.

Europe will mark them up a bit and then resell them to China.

As I said “Trump is way ahead of you.”

He has done as much as he could have under the circumstances and here we have Know-Nothings whining that he hasn’t done enough.

Even an idiot recognizes this, sorry you don’t meet that standard.

Not ‘whining’ at all.

Just asked a simple question, that’s all. Returning a solid manufacturing base withing these shores is the goal, is it not?

Relax there, sister. Just because you don’t know enough about the subject to speak intelligently about it is no reason to jump all over me.

Do some remedial reading on economics, money, and wealth. You’ll feel better!

I pointed out that he has done more to strengthen our economy and bring industry back onshore than any president history.

Relieving the Regulatory burden is a huge achievement. You must have missed that little fact.

Lower taxation on both domestic profits and profits held offshore has already produced more positive results than one would have expected. Phenomenal really. You must have missed that little fact.

Your implication that Trump had not done enough is absurd. As I said he has accomplished more quicker than anyone could have expected.

Your “question” was a slap in the face to Trump since it is based on an entirely invalid assumption.

What you believe I am missing wrt economics is also ridiculous.

Wow - you’re sounding like an emotional basket case there, sister.

You consider a simple question a slap in the face? Remarkable - you’re more of a snowflake that a lot of the college kids I come across, and that’s saying a lot. On top of being irrational.

Maybe you should crawl back to your safe space and let the adults hash things out.

In addition to your economics homework, you really (I mean REALLY) need to take a course or two in civics. You are woefully ignorant on both.

Only talks with Canada seem to have snags.

Just tell their flower child premier/son of Castro, that we will be sending 100,000 liberals per week to live in Canada for all of the Canute freebies on a non returnable one way pass.
