Arpaio seen as spoiler in Senate race

Joe Arpaio should drop out of a U.S. Senate race to allow a conservative candidate a better shot at the nomination, says an immigration watchdog.

August 28 is drawing closer. That is the day Arizona Republicans vote in their primary to pick a nominee to fill the seat being vacated by Jeff Flake.

At the moment, Rep. Martha McSally is leading tea party favorite Kelli Ward (pictured below) by a RealClearPolitics average of eight points. But that is in large part due to the continued presence of the well-known former sheriff, who is splitting the conservative vote with Ward as primary day draws closer.

Four polls are included in the RealClearPolitics analysis, all of them showing McSally with a lead that ranges from two to 13 points, with Ward following in second place in all four polls.

Dr. Kelli Ward (Arizona)William Gheen, president of Americans for Legal Immigration PAC, says Arpaio should drop out and if the 86-year-old wants to run again, he should seek the seat now occupied by Sen. John McCain.

McSally, if she can win in November, will be there for years, and AZ conservatives will again come up short.

I am really disappointed in Arpaio. IMHO there is no way he should be running for a Senate seat at his age. Plus he is taking away votes from Kelly Ward.

Neither McSally nor Ward are anything to get excited about - for one thing, both of them are soft on illegal immigration, but as far as I’m concerned a pile of last week’s trash would still be an improvement over McCain.

Kelli Ward did have an attack ad against McSally, but I haven’t heard it in a while.

There was an ad by Ward contrasting differences, but I wouldn't characterize it as an attack ad. It did cite Trump welcoming Ward into the race. The ads run promoting McSally ran audio saying McSally was the "Real Deal". That was probably in the context of addressing vet issues, which should be a strength of McSally's.

Next time I hear the ad, I will listen carefully for the sponsor's name.

Here in Arizona, McSally is trying to paint Dr. Ward as pro-illegal immigration because she supported a bill that would have restricted the NSA’s invasion of citizens’ privacy. You have to listen VERY carefully to realize the true meaning behind the smear ad.

I heard that ad yesterday!!! I almost puked! And McSally always puts on a clip that definitely sounds like it's been altered to make it sound like President Trump says "McSally is the real deal" or something like that. Definitely sounds like it was spliced together.

Yes. And then reference the Arizona Republic for the story that they are Dem PAC produced.

If he doesn’t withdraw, I will go from a favorable opinion of him to very unfavorable.

Kelli Ward is the reason Kelli Ward in not winning. I dislike this phantom split vote myth. If Kelli was convincing enough and message on point Joe would not get a single vote. There is no one to blame but ones self

Exactly. The third party "spoiler" is a myth created by the establishments of both leading parties to hide their own inadequacies. George HW Bush blamed his 1992 loss on "spoiler" Ross Perot. Well, if Bush wasn't such as p*$$ poor excuse for a President and candidate, would-be Republicans wouldn't have felt the need to vote for "spoiler" Perot to begin with. The same thing applies here. The only reason anyone would vote for an eccentric 90 year old man in the Arizona Senate race is that the alternatives are lackluster at best and pathetic at worst.

“McSally will support Trump’s agenda and his judges, just like Flake did.”

You obviously don't give a damn that the Republican Party loses the Senate and a Majority Leader Chuck Schumer can instigate all kinds of witch hunts against Trump.

Not to mention blocking his judges.

Ward is an opportunist. She barely finished a single term as a State Senator before running against McCain. Like it or not, voters are fickle and prefer someone with some type of record.

Did Flake not vote to confirm Gorsuch and other Trump judicial nominees?

Probably DefendArizona or One Nation. They are throwing money right and left to McSally.

“Kelli Ward will not beat Kyrsten Sinema. That is what you have to understand”

because you know all and want to force it on people’s understanding?

Trump was supposed to lose according to many. You don’t know God’s plan of what will happen. Tomorrow can bring huge changes in any person’s life let alone a week or more, so quit trying to sell your opinion as fact.

McSally is not so great, she’s sucking up to Trump recently but that’s same as McCain did w/voters every time election came around.

Yes, Flake has supported judges. But you wrote:

“McSally will support Trump’s agenda...just like Flake did.”

Hell of a lot more to Trump’s agenda than just judges. And McSally has been more LIBERAL than Flake.

I saw that and it had all the feel of being written by one of McCain’s staff.
My hope is that if McSally wins, Ward will get the appointment after McCain finally dies.
