Denny's apologizes after group of black customers refused service

A Florida Denny’s has apologized after a group of black customers were turned away at the restaurant.

Elijah Henderson Jr. told News4Jax that he visited the Lake City Denny’s with a group of about 25 members from his church, and was immediately told by an employee that they would not be able to accommodate them.

Henderson said that there were plenty of other groups in the restaurant, and that he thought his group was being discriminated against.

"Is it the color of my skin? That's where I left it at. Is that a problem? Because everybody else was eating and drinking, and she was, like, 'I am not going to be able to accommodate you all,’” he told the station.

Henderson said that the employee claimed there was only one cashier and one cook working at the time. The employee no longer works at the Denny’s, according to News4Jax.

"There was another family that came in right after me, she was, like, 'You guys go ahead and have a seat. I will be with you momentarily,’” he said.

“They are wrong for how they treated us," he added. "Point blank, I don't care what you look like, or where you come from, I just want equality."

Denny’s corporate office said in a statement that the incident was “unacceptable.”

"We were shocked by the unacceptable experience our guests received recently at our Lake City, Florida, location, and sincerely apologize,” the statement said. “We simply do not tolerate discrimination of any kind in our restaurants."

Henderson also said that Denny’s chief operating officer called him to personally apologize.

"He was like, 'Well, I work with a diversity department.' I was like, 'Well, you guys have to do a little more work because it's not working,’” Henderson said. “’What you're doing may be working at corporate, but when it drizzles down and comes to the franchisees, it is not working.’”

Sambo’s was the north turn around spot for dragging Main and breakfast at 2am back in the day.

I love Denny’s, but I suppose next time, I will have to pay $89 dollars for pancakes after the chain settles with this bunch.

You would think that the Black power structure would appreciate a story about a little Black boy who turned a tiger into butter.

I don’t think I ever ate at the one in San Clemente. When we went to the State Park to vacation, we liked to eat at Landell’s, a family-owned coffee shop near Avenida Calafia. In 1973, Leonid Brezhev’s KGB security guards had lunch there—their boss was in town for a summit meeting with President Nixon at his Western White House. On one occasion, I talked to some of them.

We also liked to eat at Dave’s a Mexican restaurant that catered to surfers. For years, while driving along the coast, I would time my trip to hit Dave’s at mealtime.

It’s prophesied that it is coming. Yes, from Jesus Himself. It is a sign of the Last Days.

Playing the race card constantly is going to result in a push-back, IMHO, on a global scale. I believe it has to be global for Christ to mention it.

Nation shall rise again nation.

Ethnos (Gk.) shall rise against ethnos. (Gk.) IOW

Ethnic group shall rise against ethnic group.

It will be ugly. But the baiters only see the ghetto jackpot.

That’s why Obama knew exactly what he and Eric Holder were going by pouring a little gasoline on any fire they could.

If corporate was able to fire this employee, then it’s a corporate run store, and if they only had one server and one cook, that’s THEIR fault, not the poor server who got fired. If the reason the server gave for refusing them was legitimate, then she did them a favor. One cook and one server trying to feed a group of 25, plus whoever else comes in, would take HOURS. If I were a customer, I’d get really steamed if they were too short-staffed to get my food out in a timely manner, and didn’t tell me upfront, so I could decide whether or not to stay or leave.

Only reason they would do this is so afterwards they could complain about the slow service and demand free Gibs.
Typical.

‘Black privilege’ means getting an apology and media coverage over this.

I wonder about how considerate the church is, if it descended on a badly understaffed Denny’s.

Surely this can’t be the Church of the Eternal Black Person’s Grievance?

It stank that the Denny’s couldn’t accommodate that many additional people, but it is believable, and the only regret the Denny’s needed to express was that of being too understaffed to serve a group that size at that time.

It might be the news report that is overblowing the problem, too.

Maybe she didn’t do it quite like that — warning the group that yes, they can be seated, but it will take an eternity that wouldn’t change no matter what color they were.

I was at a barbecue place a month ago and wound up entering not long after a party of 60 had been seated. I was made to sit at a wobbly stool at the bar. I noticed there were empty tables with settings and chairs. I went up to one African-American waiter and asked if I could sit at the empty table.

He said “You can sit there but there’s a good chance you’ll be ignored. All our servers are needed for the other group.”

I sat anyway and waited about 20 minutes until my patience expired. I went across the street and ate seafood instead.

Two weeks later, I returned to the barbecue place and happened to be served by the same African-American waiter. I explained what happened on my last visit and he said “I thought I recognized you.”

I told him I appreciated his honesty with me that night. He turned out to be an excellent server and I gave him a generous tip.

Now, let’s say the Denny’s employee had said to Mr. Henderson “You are welcome to sit but we just have one server and one cook so your group may be in for a very long wait to get your food.” Would Mr. Henderson cry racism or would he realize he’d put the restaurant in an uncomfortable position by showing up unannounced with a large dinner party and decided to revise his plans?

Many times, as a restaurant owner,
I was reluctantly faced with the
decision of refusing service to
large groups, since it was just me
and a waitress waiting on customers.
This group, in my opinion, (due to
the current political atmosphere),
are just looking for their fifteen
minutes of black racism fame.

This has happened before.

For instance, in 1993, Black [USSS] Agents Sue Denny's.

Yawn. Who cares? Racism. Not racism. It’s getting old and my “care meter” doesn’t even register anymore.

That was my thought. A group of 25 would be 5 tables or more.

At a certain point, you have to call ahead.

I wonder how many black people were eating at the restaurant at that time. Hmmmm....?

In my youth I worked in a few service establishments from dishwasher to Management. Here’s a hint: Do NOT show up with a large group of people without calling ahead first unless you want a total cluster.
