Sound has negative mass, and all around you it's drifting up, up and away — albeit very slowly.
That's the conclusion of a paper submitted on July 23 to the preprint journal arXiv, and it shatters the conventional understanding that researchers have long had of sound waves: as massless ripples that zip through matter, giving molecules a shove but ultimately balancing any forward or upward motion with an equal and opposite downward motion. That's a straightforward model that will explain the behavior of sound in most circumstances, but it's not quite true, the new paper argues.
A phonon — a particle-like unit of vibration that can describe sound at very small scales — has a very slight negative mass, and that means sound waves travel upward ever so slightly, said Rafael Krichevsky, a graduate student in physics at Columbia University.

Actually, according to the article, it's not even an APPARENT property. :)
What you said: By reducing the density of the substance above in a gravity field, the sound wave induces its own (slight) upward travel.
This reminds me of some of the stuff discussed in controversial TV shows about ancient astronauts and such. Basically, that heavy stones and objects were moved in the distant past by use of sound energy to reduce the density of objects and lift them upwards in a gravitational field. Various devices used to generate particular vibratory sounds to lift heavy objects. Most people say it's BS, but we don't know what we don't know.
Please be sure to post the retraction of this theory when it comes out.

Equals are opposite, remember? If *you* sing while on the scales, the negative sounds leaving you impart additional positive gravity to you.
What you need is a couple of people singing at you. For best results, hold your arms out to your sides and have them sing into your armpits.

If you're talking about the Bernouli effect, then a 747 has negative mass--according to the article. It does not.

A sound wave isn’t even an object. The theory is to say that if it is treated as an object, it would be an object that has a kind of slight buoyancy.
Agreed. I think they are trying to say that sound is like light—it has properties of both waves and particles (phonons).
So dark matter is made up of tachyons?
Wouldn’t it disperse in a tearing hurry if it was?
