ALBANY, N.Y. At an event in the Adirondacks last week, Gov. Andrew Cuomo recounted a treasured memory of the time his family retrieved an eagle feather from Saranac Lake and kept it after one of the beautiful birds swooped near his canoe.
In telling the story, the New York Democrat was unknowingly confessing a crime.
A federal law prohibits non-Native Americans from possessing bald eagle parts, including feathers. The law has been on the books for nearly 80 years, but most Americans, Cuomo included, probably dont know about it.
Cuomo, a lawyer and former federal official, revealed his legal faux pas Tuesday while announcing an economic development grant for the village of Saranac Lake.
After The Associated Press in Albany inquired about the issue, Cuomo spokesman Richard Azzopardi said the family was unaware of the federal law when they took the feather from the water.
We have two options, put it back in the river or donate it to a US Fish and Wildlife repository, Azzopardi wrote in an email. Well ?do one or the other.

It is also illegal to posses the feathers of any federally protected bird, even song birds.
Laws don’t apply to Democrats.
Most Americans probably don't know about it? Based on my experience, I'd beg to differ.
While I agree in principle that it might be a good idea for the feds to have limited power to define and protect endangered species, while the states automatically have these powers under the 10th Amendment for non-constitutionally owned federal land, it remains that the states have never expressly constitutionally delegated to the feds the specific power to address INTRAstate wildlife issues.
"From the accepted doctrine that the United States is a government of delegated powers, it follows that those not expressly granted, or reasonably to be implied from such as are conferred, are reserved to the states, or to the people. To forestall any suggestion to the contrary, the Tenth Amendment was adopted. The same proposition, otherwise stated, is that powers not granted are prohibited [emphasis added]. United States v. Butler, 1936.
Consider that corrupt, post-17th Amendment ratification federal lawmakers will promise citizens and illegal aliens everything under sun in order to win their votes, regardless if the feds actually have no express constitutional authority to deal with an issue.
Yep, me too.
I learned it when I got my first hunting license. It’s covered in the state law here and in the hunting law handbooks both feather and fir.
A federal law prohibits non-Native Americans from possessing bald eagle parts, including feathers.
Well, that's a BS law, but, it's still the law, even applies to frauds like Elizabeth Warren. Thanks jazusamo.
Carlin...funny stuff..
Thanks
What people don’t realize is that the Bald Eagle is not a land bird. So if your in Nebraska you never see them. But if you’re near a large water source they are everywhere. Bald Eagles are sea eagles. They feed primarily on fish. And they eat land carrion as food gets scarce. Each bird has a huge hunting area. So when a few birds get killed there is more food for the rest of the eagles.
With a bird that big, it can’t really withstand hunters. because it stays in the same place generally. Only a few birds migrate. Most will stay in place. And even those who migrate return to the same nests. So hunters can just sit under a nest and blow an eagle away. Its not really hunting and you end up with an inedible dead eagle. But we are close to the point where we will need to cull the heard in spots like the Oregon and Washington coasts.
He could have made it really heart thumping BS if he told us that the feather fell from the sky into his canoe and had an eagle tear on it.
I can call bullshit because I knows it when I sees it!
The Cuomo family is a bunch of suckholes....Bob Grant was right!
This is one of those really stupid laws that needs to be looked at for changes to make it more sane.
Cuomo is like Justin Trudeau, if it wasn’t for their name these two schoolgirls would amount to nothing.
