Richard Russell, who dreamed of being in the military and once ran a bakery with his wife, was identified as the suicidal airport mechanic who stole an airplane from Sea-Tac International Airport and took it on a dramatic unauthorized flight, where it was chased by fighter planes as he attempted stunts in the air before the plane crashed.
The man known as Rich in air traffic control audio and dubbed the skyking on Twitter broke hearts on social media as people followed the unauthorized flight because it came to a fatal end. The incident led to a dramatic and tragic night on August 10, 2018, as aircraft were grounded at Sea-Tac while fighter jets followed the man and air traffic controllers tried unsuccessfully to help him land the aircraft.
On social media, Richard Russell used the name Beebo Russell. Although authorities have not released his name, The Seattle Times identified the man as Richard Russell.

Fact #6. He destroyed a $30 million dollar aircraft, when a 30 cent pistol cartridge or a $3 razor blade could have achieved the same result. Dirty rotten jackass.
Is that an opinion there Dr. Freud?
You seem to be making statements about something for which you have little if any insight
There is no key.
He'd be following in the footsteps of Mathias Rust flying into Red Square, the guy that flew a Cessna onto the White House grounds, the Bishop/Bishara kid in Texas that flew into a building and the mysterious MH370 pilot, among others.
(My conscience is clear regarding 9/11, however.)
The A/C was on the ramp of a maintenance hangar, not at the gate.
He was a definte threat in the air. He was obviously suicidal. I wonder if he crashed or was shot down. I would hope he was shot down. He could have killed hundreds.
On my very first flight in my adventure of obtaining ASEL, my flight instructor never touched any control...thanks to MSFSX.
Flight Simulator X with the settings set to realistic is harder to fly than real aircraft. Great job on FSX.
There is no key.
Ive never flown a Dash-8, but all of the aircraft Ive piloted have had ignition keys. C 150 up to BE9L and much in between.
“The A/C was on the ramp of a maintenance hangar, not at the gate.”
Thanks, I had not seen that piece of info.
Wrong thread buddy.
I used to live at the end of Fox Island. I thought about him crashin g there roo
Easy, it is protected by our Feral Government miscreants that could not pour piss out of a boot with instructions on the bottom.
This statement proves the guy was not out of his mind crazy but knew exactly how the world turned in Amerika
With that radio exchange specifically mentioning he was white, coupled with the news that he may have been a conservative, I think I’m beginning to understand.
I mean, look... The guy was stuck being a baggage handler at SeaTac Airport. It’s a hard job, coupled with little pay, and the guy possibly didn’t think there was any way forward for him. When you’re constantly bombarded with the opinion in the news media that white, Christian males are the cause of all the world’s problems... It’ll get to you.
Yes, I agree that what he did was stupid and dangerous and could have ended many other lives than his own. However, I also can see the reason for his despair, and wanting to just end it all.
There’s a lot of people here who think that those suffering from depression should toughen up and pull themselves up by their own bootstraps. Unfortunately, not everyone can do that.
Thanks!
What kind of controls (hopefully not keyboard) have you used to fly FS(X)?
CH Products yoke, and pedals. Not high end, but very effective.
>>>And he was cleared to be around aircraft as a baggage handler<<<
I thought he was a Mechanic.
He very well could have viewed this video to learn how to start a Dash 8. I’m sure investigators are looking at his computer.

Bookmarking to read later. Really sad.
I had a friend that at one point regularly flew commuter flights- she called them “Treetop Airlines” and said if you were lucky they cleared the treetops.
