Teachers getting another chance to pass a math test (NC)

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Some North Carolina elementary school teachers were initially told they would lose their jobs if they didn't pass a Math test they call difficult and unfair.

Teachers say they recently got a call from their school district informing them they have another year to pass the test. Hundreds of teachers have failed the test repeatedly. Teachers argue what's on the test has nothing to do with what they teach in a classroom for students in Kindergarten to 5th grade.

"Never in a million years would we even come close to teaching some of the topics on this test," veteran CMS teacher Krista Ricks said.

“It might be dependent on the grade level of the students.”

So, you are ok with a first grade teacher only having a first grade education?

No, but it doesn't have to be college entry level for first grade teachers...:^)

I do remember a long time ago - I am now retired - when I was a drunken engineering student having to show a teacher's college girlfriend what a graph was...^)

“1+1= what?”

“Uh...2?”

“Correct! You pass this time!”

I taught high school math many years ago. I found the majority of students coming into high school hate math. The HS math teachers must not only teach math principles and operations, but un-teach them the many bad attitudes and concepts they learned in elementary school. They come to you hating math because their previous teachers hated math.IMO

Q: 2 + 2 = ?

From 1984: In the end the Party would announce that two and two made five, and you would have to believe it.

So, what has the Democrat Party declared 2+2 to be today?

This is laughable, there is no chance it will lead to dismissals. It will have a disparate impact on minority teachers and will be thrown out for that reason. It is a total waste of resources and effort.

Then you have the problem of replacing the dismissed teachers. Who is going to want to work in schools like those in the Chicago? Martial arts would be a prerequisite for teaching there rather than math.

There are only a handful of college “educated” graduates who could even get a passable score. A test should concentrate on simple arithmetic not one which is at ACT/SAT levels.

The authors of this test apparently are in La-La Land and it is correct that it has no bearing on subjects other than math or science.

My late wife was an Art teacher and would not have a chance with this test. However, there wasn’t a better art teacher on the planet. Her young Black students loved her and produced some terrific art. She was White as snow and her students would complain about “that ole White teacher” to her.

It is not a simple math test. I don’t know what high schools you refer to since MAYBE 10% of the nation’s high schools would have half of the tested pass it.

It's not a slam-dunk.

It is an absurd test for K5 qualification. I looked at it there is no small degree of trickery involved too.

Hillary pulled something like this on K5 teachers when they were elected to governorship of Arkansas. That was after they worked so hard to get her rapist elected.

The critics are correct about applicability as I noted above.

May as well base the test on French. That would have the same applicability or relevance.

Like the parents could pass this. Maybe 25% could get a decent score.

Many are far from stupid and I doubt that the majority of FReepers (including you) could pass it.

If you want a test just use the ACT or SAT scores which will be disastrous enough.

Parents can learn, too. Folks should never stop learning. What’s missing here isn’t knowledge. It’s desire. Though if their kids’ futures aren’t incentive enough, God knows what is.

The students need a basic ability in arithmetic and you are right about the students hating math. Someone needs to figure out a way of making math less hated.

It isn’t because the math teachers are not enthusiastic, those I had loved the subject and you could tell it.

Don’t expect many passers if geometry and trigonometry were involved. And even math teachers hate statistics.

I saw an article about this a couple weeks ago and thought the teachers must be ignoramuses. So I checked out some sample questions on the Pearson Test. The first (and only) question I looked at was for 8th Grade. I'll be darned if I can find a solution for a continuous function. I suppose the function could be the inequality Y > X and a solution would be:

1, 4
5, 6
5, 8 1, 10

Of course, learning should never stop but seriously how many parents could even understand calculus much less teach it.

It is more because of intelligence levels, only after a certain point does desire play any role. You know who would fail this in overwhelming numbers.

I loved math but have to agree with the poster that kids go into it hating and fearing math.

So a college educated teacher can’t do high school algebra? I loved the statement that if they didn’t get rid of this test the good teachers would go to adjacent States. If those that can’t pass this test are the “good” teachers, I’d hate to see the bad ones.

VA is not an easy jump for teaching jobs. Theyhave many requirements for certification.

I quit school, ended up getting my GED when 19 and even when in school, I chose shop classes and they wouldn’t let me take advanced math like algebra because of that, yet I could still pass this test.

No I do have a natural inclination for math but I would think a math teacher would too. Otherwise, why bother teaching math if you don’t like it and aren’t good at it?

Back in my day, I’m pretty sure all the math teachers went to college and actually studied math there.

I’ve heard rumors that the practice tests and study guides bear no resemblance to the actual test and that the publishing company is making bank on all the tests and re-tests.
