Teachers getting another chance to pass a math test (NC)

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Some North Carolina elementary school teachers were initially told they would lose their jobs if they didn't pass a Math test they call difficult and unfair.

Teachers say they recently got a call from their school district informing them they have another year to pass the test. Hundreds of teachers have failed the test repeatedly. Teachers argue what's on the test has nothing to do with what they teach in a classroom for students in Kindergarten to 5th grade.

"Never in a million years would we even come close to teaching some of the topics on this test," veteran CMS teacher Krista Ricks said.

What will they do if the correct minority ratio doesn’t pass the test.

“It might be dependent on the grade level of the students.”

LOL! Basic HS math. And they have to spend money on tutors to pass it!

“It might be dependent on the grade level of the students.”

So, you are ok with a first grade teacher only having a first grade education?

Will tests be retaken in a monitored environment, or can they do this online? If it’s online, the attitude is ‘Don’t Ask, and Please DON’T TELL us that you Cheated!”

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

Never in a million years would we even come close to teaching our students "how" to think.

Narcissistic bastages.

”Never in a million years would we even come close to teaching some of the topics on this test,”

That covers real Arithmetic, geography, history, grammar, civics, and most of the rest of what schools used to teach i.e. real academic subjects.

When kids used to ask me, their teacher, “Why do we have to learn this stuff? We’ll never use it in real life.”

I would respond: “I’m just trying to keep you one jump ahead of the monkeys.”

That retort always got laughs, some buy-in, some would ponder it for days and write it on a card at the end of the term.

Now, I realize — that comment wouldn’t be well-received in some demographic situations.

I am a teacher & this is beyond humiliating.

I hope your meaning is that any math teacher should be able to pass it. But, an alternative interpretation is that it is beyond humiliating because you find it difficult.

I taught HS for 30 years. Whenever the subject of certification exams would come up, there would be those who said: “That exam does NOT tell anything about who can teach.”

To that I would say, “Maybe not; but it DOES say a lot about who CAN’T teach, or maybe who shouldn’t.”

When I read your comment, I thought it was a great comeback and never once thought of it having to do with anything other than animals. What a sad society we live in that some people would automatically assume you were saying something racist.

This is an article about school teachers. You can’t expect it to be grammatically correct.

Heaven forbid that we ask you to be smarter than the kids you are teaching, Krista.

The test is about the level of the SAT math, IIRC. Maybe the general quantitative GRE.

Not trivially simple, but should define a good teacher.

Math teachers should all do well on it, as should science teachers.

English teachers, not so much. But if you had all your elementary school teachers passing this test, you would have a strong K-6 teaching corps.

GOOD on them for making them take it again.

Raise the bar.

Q: 2 + 2 = ?

a) 3
b) 162
c) The square root of -144
d) Whatever I want it to be
e) Math is just an oppressive fiction created by the cis-male patriarchy to prevent women from balancing checkbooks.
f) I was a Lesbian Gender Studies major in college so I don’t recognize any of those complicated symbols.

Pick as many answers as you feel are approptiate. See your proctor if you’d like a teddy bear or coloring book.
