Yesterday afternoon, the California Senate passed SB 282 which legalizes aiding, advising, or encouraging assisted suicide. The bill was rushed through on the first day the legislature returned from its summer recess, giving no opportunity for debate or even opposing remarks.
The bill was introduced in the wake of Life Legals challenge to Californias assisted suicide law.
We registered our opposition to the bill early on, as it grants complete legal immunity to anyone who wants to facilitate the death of someone who is defined as terminally ill under Californias assisted suicide law. The law defines terminal as a condition expected to lead to death within six months if left untreated.
This means diabetes, high blood pressure, treatable conditionseven an infectioncould be considered terminal.
Medical studies show that the vast majority of peopleup to 77%diagnosed with a terminal illness suffer from major depression. A study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology found a statistically significant association between clinical depression and the desire for hastened death. In other words, people who are depressed often have suicidal thoughts.
Californias assisted suicide law allows interested witnesses, which include beneficiaries, to sign a persons request for assisted suicide drugs. The new lawassisted suicide on steroidsallows an individual to aid, advise, and encourage a person to commit suicideAND sign off on the method of suicidewhile financially benefitting from the persons death. And its all legal now.
Under existing law, Any person who deliberately aids, advises, or encourages another to commit suicide is guilty of a felony. Yesterday, the California legislature carved out an exception to this long-standing law that will give unscrupulous family members and others unqualified immunity to actively participate in the killing of another human being.

Does that extend to sisters in law? Because I have this one, uh never mind.
This sounds about right... for California.

Interesting. It appears best not to get ill or depressed in California now, especially if one has life insurance. Or a will. Quite a temptation to the beneficiary, is it not?
It has not yet been signed into law . . .
Moonbeam won’t veto. If fit very much within his worldview.
Just legalize ecstasy in old folks homes. They’ll go happy.
I believe this opinion to be accurate.
I neglected to ping the Terri Schiavo group. I apologise.
Key Objections to the Legalization of Assisted Suicide
1. Assisted suicide is a deadly mix with our broken, profit-driven health care system
2. Assisted suicide is dangerous to people with disabilities and many other people in vulnerable circumstances.
3. Available statistics show that pain is rarely the reason why people choose assisted suicide.
4. The supposed safeguards included in the Oregon and Washington State laws dont really protect patients for many reasons;
5. Problems with Oregons data collection and data soundness, and the lack of any investigations of abuse or meaningful oversight, are so significant as to render conclusions based on those data to be critically flawed.
6. There is research strongly suggesting Oregon has seen a reduction in the quality of palliative care at the end-of-life since the Oregon law went into effect.
7. Some 25 states have rejected the legalization of assisted suicide since Oregon passed its law. We should heed their significant public policy concerns.
8. Many key organizations oppose the legalization of assisted suicide.
9. Suicide requests from people with terminal illness are usually based on fear and depression.
10. International models, particularly the Netherlands, show that assisted suicide cannot be limited to a small, targeted group once Pandoras box is opened.

I excerpted the story. This part needs to be included:

Q: What was the only sad part of Dr. Kevorkian’s death?
A: All of the gift cards people gave relatives for his services went unused.
Seniors, don’t move to California.
I suppose it depends on one’s point of view.
This appears to be one for the Supreme Court.

I imagine this will give pause to many who live there presently.

Wut? So if Grandpa is tired of it all, but wants to take out the rude Granddaughter that refused the fruit cups, it is A-OK with CA? Cool!
