he Watergate tapes stand as one of the stunning, implausible twists of American history. Nixon confessed his crimes and recorded himself in the process. Who does that?
In their book The Final Days, Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein write, the single thread that linked the problems together was the Presidents tapes. The lawyers represented a President who had bugged himself, who had blurted his secrets into hidden microphones. They had not yet heard the tapes, nor seen any transcripts of them. The President would not permit it. They were told to mount a defense, but were not given the information to do so.
The Watergate scandal became about those tapes the battle to make them public and expose Nixons private confessions. Without the tapes, a resignation would have been unlikely. This was a flimsy bit of providence, a ridiculous chance act upon which the integrity of our political system came to rest. But so it went.
The White House today has no internal taping system. But it has, perhaps, something serving the same purpose: Donald Trump himself.

They are really reaching with this one. Get mental help.
Brace yourself, this is only the beginning.
When did nixon confess a crime on tape? I don’t recall this?
BWAHAHAHAhahahahahaha!
Not at all. I find this people should be in a mental ward.
It’s Ezra Klein, the founder of a group (Journ-o-List) intended to coordinate the news in a way that helps the left.
You expected anything less?
Fakenews
[I dont recall this?]
Doesn’t matter. HISTORICAL FACTS aren’t relevant to MSM.
These people provide enough material for dozens of Psychology dissertations.
I was around for Watergate. It wasn’t the crime. It was the coverup. Guess the left is counting on the public being ignorant of history.
Democrats/Media types been repeating that Trump said above he fired Comey to end the investigation, which is not what he said as is clear above.
This Editorial is a good example of Dems talking points.
That Trump's tweets are confessions of crimes, and even if they are not crimes they should be.
There was an 18 1/2 minute accidentally erased section of the tape which everyone was convinced was the smoking gun. Rosemary Woods, Nixon's secretary, said that she accidentally erased it.
So, in the court of public opinion, Nixon was convicted on the evidence contained in a blank tape.
The MSM saw the downfall of Nixon and their role in it as journalism’s shining hour.
They have been salivating at the prospect ever since of repeating this feat, of bringing down a Republican President. And thus the constant comparisons to Nixon. They are obsessed.
That the concentration on the 19 minutes was the evidence of something criminal was always an absurdity.
Hope you are well!!
Wasn’t to me. I’d’ve voted to impeach/convict his happy @ss, too.
Seems that Ezra took a few minutes away from his fixation with the newly revealed painting of Baron Trump in the nude to engage in a political porn fantasy rather than a kiddie porn one.
To be slightly more accurate, it was just one of their more successful attempts at exercising their role in a coup détat

Ezra Klein (Journ0List) showed us yet again these guys don’t know anything about history.
But my guess is that a ‘smart’ guy like Ezra Klein knew, yet he wants to confuse the Dem base that really don’t.
Watergate? Really??!!???!
