Democrat Senator: ‘Infowars Is Just The Tip Of A Giant Iceberg’
Daily Caller ^ | 8/7/18

Posted on 08/07/2018 3:34:15 AM PDT by markomalley

Following the removal of Alex Jones from Facebook, Apple and YouTube, for violating “hate speech” policies, Democrat Senator Chris Murphy tweeted “Infowars is just the tip of a giant iceberg.”

Monday afternoon Murphy tweeted, “I know Facebook and Apple and YouTube have gotten so big they sometimes seem like the government. But they aren’t. They are private companies that shouldn’t knowingly spread lies and hate. They took a good first step today removing Infowars. Infowars is just the tip of the iceberg of hate and lies that uses sites like Facebook and Youtube to tear our nation apart. These companies must do more than take down one website. The survival of our democracy depends on it.”

Senator Murphy did not clarify just exactly who, or what outlets make up the rest of the “giant iceberg of hate and lies” — and many conservatives are leery where this may be going.

Earlier this year, Twitter announced it would start using an algorithm to crack down on “hate speech.” One of the key components of the algorithm would collapse abusive or potentially “low quality” tweets by detecting certain phrases and patterns. The algorithm would also tweak search results, to downgrade abusive tweets.

So far it appears that the new algorithm may be targeting conservatives.  On Sunday, conservative commentator Candace Owens temporarily had her account suspended. Twitter later restored her account, claiming that it was an “error.” Last month, Vice News reported that several prominent Republican officials were not being featured in Twitter search results. This tactic has been referred to as “shadow banning.”

Twitter’s new algorithm has many conservatives leery where this may be going — their concern? Who gets to determine what constitutes hate speech?

Believe me, I am not suggesting this is all good. I would LIKE to have some things offline. The use of FB and Google portals for applications isn't something I've encountered but that is just lazy if you ask me.

Nonetheless, Trump can't get Wall funding out of this government and he's the President. Why do we think the entity that gave us Obamacare, the EPA, DACA, the IRS, and the Kelo ruling would "properly" regulate FB et al? I suspect if we so weaponized the govt we'd subsequently be REQUIRED to have a FB and Google account to access everything or else we'd face a penalty.

The Left is slouching their way to their very own Peji Sluta (Greasy Grass).

Sounds like little Chrissie is riding point...

Glad I’m not a shareholder. This will not end well for these companies.

Depends. FB will see bumps in the road but a lot of their users won't care. Apple is at all time highs and will not be cratering anytime soon.

Classic Nazi or Stalinist. When they figure out they can’t win the people over they look to make the opposition ‘disappear’.

Who can be broken up if they become too monopolistic. A word to the wise.

“Infowars has their own website.”
Probably blacklisted by Google as well so that nobody will find it.

— infowars.com is the first hit when I search for infowars

The fact that we have sitting U.S. Senators saying Fascistbook, Twitter, YouTube and Apple deleting Alex Jones is "defending democracy" makes me cringe

Chris Murphy is a Fascist who wants us dead.

The internet Dark Ages has now descended upon us, where radical left-wing tech giants run by deranged, mentally ill communists will decide whether your content qualifies as “hate speech.” -

Fair points..that reveal the danger in calling to the govt for help.

Forget about the legalities... Does anyone really think the Deep Staters and this colossus giving us the IRS etc would really make things better? As I wrote elsewhere, empowering this govt to go after these private actors could result in some twisted result where all citizens are then REQUIRED to have a FB and Google account or else you'll have to pay a fee/tax. It can't happen here? Look at all the legal rulings blocking Trump's efforts on immigration. Look at Roberts' Obamacare opinion.

While I empathize with the sentiment that The Constitution is dead, it's simply not true. Yea, the Commerce Clause is a joke, abortion isn't anywhere in the Constitution, and Kelo was really, really bad jurisprudence. That said, surely this piece of paper's existence had SOMETHING to do with the 300 million firearms in the hands of we unwashed masses, thousands of churches in existence, and the fact that we are still allowed to have 4th Amendment compliant curtains in our home. She may not be as strong as she was previously, but she's not quite dead yet.

Asking today's Deep State-backed Leviathan to save us from FB and Google is like asking Hillary to protect our embassy in Benghazi. We little people have to solve this with private action.

Back in 1987, IBM was Big Blue...arguably the FB and Google of its time. Since 1987, IBM’s stock is up about 4.2% on a compounded annual basis.

The very fact Infowars was banned on four different online platforms within 12 hours of each other also could make Apple, Facebook, Spotify and Alphabet (Google) possibly liable under the RICO statutes.

It’s very different from entering someone’s house. The present themselves as a PUBLIC platform, available to anyone in the public to use and read (in fact their entire business model is based on user-generated content). Justice Hugo Black addressed a very analogous situation in Marsh v. Alabama.

He suggested that there was so odd things about the event and entertained that it might have been a false flag. From what I can tell, he did NOT explicitly say that it was all a hoax and nobody died, but that’s what the media accused him of.

Jones definitely gets theatrical at times, but I consider most the attacks on him smear jobs. They can easily tweak their arguments and ban Breitbart and FR for hate speech, “white supremacy”, and conspiracy mongering
