Trump says hire American. These businesses say they can't — foreign labor limits are killing them

For nearly 25 years, Donnie and Michelle Massie have been on the ride of their life, traveling with their family-run carnival, Alpine Amusement, across the Midwest.

But now they say it may come to an end. The Massies, like other seasonal American businesses including landscaping and crabbing, have for years relied on a federal seasonal worker program — known as H-2B visas — to keep their midway moving. But this year, they were denied the 44 visas they requested to bring in their usual workers from Mexico and South Africa.

SNIP

In an unprecedented move, the Trump administration shifted the program from a first-come, first-serve-based model of doling out visas to a lottery system, making it more difficult for businesses to access temporary foreign workers. Congress, which created and oversees the guest worker program, has set the limit on these visas at 66,000 and divides them between the summer and winter seasons, but has rebuffed calls to eliminate or permanently raise the cap.

Instead, Congress allowed the Department of Homeland Security to make additional temporary visas available this year, the third year in a row it has done so.

After facing the additional demand for H-2B workers, the Trump administration released an additional 15,000 visas in May. But it's still not enough, industry organizations and business owners say, because the entire system is badly in need of an overhaul.

Temporary seasonal workers have a poor record of becoming long-term illegal aliens who overstay their visas.

Back in the day most carneys were derelicts and winos. I guess they all get welfare now so we have to import foreign derelicts and winos?

There is no labor shortage only a wage shortage.

“H1B and H2B Visas have to go, period.”

The current Congress could abolish the program tomorrow, but they won’t.

As a teenager, I worked for a day or two for a carney, manning a game of chance booth on the midway. It wasn’t worth my time, and yeah, that sounds like a good summary of the carneys.

And females getting pregnant and popping out a US citizen, allowing them to stay for life, along with their families so far away.

55 visas and work permits sounds as if everyone in the company was not a US citizen.

About right.

But pay more and clean up the working conditions and these jobs are just about right for young adults—whether in college seasonally or part-time (e.g., online) or just wanting to travel some while they are still young and unencumbered by family.

I am so sick of this argument.

Teenagers. The other cheap, temporary labor pool. And they don’t shit on the lettuce causing an E. Coil outbreak.

Illegal immigration and the visa scams are just replacements for slavery.

Illegal aliens make good compliant workers.

Their desperation and fear of being deported allow businesses to take advantage of them.

They don’t want to pay the rate the local market demands for the jobs. They want to run a business in the beautiful, wealthy and safe US, but pay their employees Mexican scale.

It used to be collage students who were working toward a degree in hospitality would take those jobs.

It gave them "life credit".

I guess trotting on down to the local community collage is too hard?

And don't tell me there are no collage students looking for summer jobs or that they will not work hard. I just hired a couple to move some stuff for me. Those young men worked their tails off.

So, the LIMIT was RAISED, but the choice of workers is no longer “predictable,” due to a lottery versus first come basis and that is why an employer wants to close?

How many times was the same person coming back on predictable visas? Were they indentured servant substitutes?

Screw the business that exists only off of foreign workers working for pennies. I know these people came over and had to give their entire paycheck to the company that got them their visa. They can’t take days off and they are required to stay in special housing with high fees. These people have nothing left to take home after they are robbed by “the system.”

BS. Pure BS.

The traditional core of their business has always been ignorant wannabe con artists, covered in stupid tats, unable to speak in anything but slang, and living with "substance abuse" problems and chronic STDs.

There are more such folks wondering the streets of this country than ever before and now, the majority of them have college degrees of some sort! They have to pay back their college loans and can't do it if on just minimum wage plus a percentage of what they bilk the clientele out of.

Let the SOBs in that "industry" pay what it takes to snag the idle dolts wondering the streets or go out of business.
