Bill Would Grant New Yorkers 3 Months Paid Bereavement Leave To Mourn Loss Of Loved Ones

August 2, 2018 at 7:59 pm

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Lawmakers want every worker in New York to get three months paid bereavement leave to mourn the loss of a loved one.

But many business owners say it could be crippling. Will Gov. Andrew Cuomo sign it into law?

The bill is sponsored by Sen. Richard Funke, of upstate Batavia, whose son died.

“I’ve experienced the pain of losing a child. The grief can be unpredictable and overwhelming,” he said in a statement. “No employee should have to fear losing their job in order to take the time they need to mourn.”

Sen. David Carlucci, of Clarkstown, is cosponsoring the bill, which quietly passed at the end of the legislative session and is awaiting action by the governor.

“We need to make it as easy as possible, be humane and understand the real cost involved in losing a loved one,” said Carlucci.

The bill covers the death of a spouse, domestic partner, child, parent, in-law, grandparent or grandchild.

The law, if passed, phases in what workers can collect between 50 to 67 percent of the average weekly wage — $680 a week.

But Greg Greenwood, owner of Bleeker Street Pizza, said it could cripple mom and pop stores.

I’d be satisfied with just the loss of my ex wife. Hell, if I’d shot her when I first wanted, I’d have been out by now.

Businesses will be fleeing NY like Maduro’s soldiers fleeing his speech today.

I can totally see if people in a company donate some of their bereavement time to a co-worker that has suffered an especially grievous loss, but 3 months mandated paid time dictated by the state?

That’s not going to bring that person back, and it may really makes things especially bad for you at work.

No.

Everyone will become independent contractors. Businesses cannot be endless wallets and benefit givers to workers who want to be taken care of as children.

Never was their role.

I thought liberals loved higher taxes. NY deserves the taxes they get. They voted for it.

Enjoy the suck.

what about mixed families where you have 4 sets of grandparents?....

I've never seen such a harsh punitive suggested law in my life, but I'm still young enough to know that someone sometime will think of something worse...

Ha!!

The State doesn't "make" money....it taxes it's citizens, and business's for money.

What do I think would happen...if your idea takes....

Taxes will go up, and up....

I've had a lot of death in my family...over the last few years....Never took one day off.........

One former co-irker was a master of manipulating bereavement leave.

When this person wanted to take off, it was simple enough to produce an obit from the big city several states away that they originally came from.

The names was very common and her super was a sap that went for the scam every time.

Real dumb idea! I can see the day off for the funeral that counts against a vacation/comp day.

You’re right. My son recently tried unsuccessfully to rescue a good friend who drowned. He was torn up then got back to work. He’s certainly still grieving but doing far better.

Right. Force the State.
Guess where the money the “State” has comes from?

I question if this is even beneficial to the mourners.

Getting back into the routine of working may help with mourning. 3 months of thinking about it, and they may be incapacitated.

Not a psychologist, but I play one on FR.

I had a friend in college who used the “my mother died” excuse to get out of a test or an assignment with every prof each semester. He had an organic chemistry test he didn’t study for and used it when he came back to class after skipping it. The prof said, I thought she died already. He ended up having to repeat it but didn’t take it from her. Looking back, with all the stuff this kid pulled, I’m thinking he might have actually been a psychopath.

I feel privileged that my former employer gave me a week when my mom was dying. Three months is absurd.

Oh, yes. That is not far behind, I bet. Give it a few years and someone will ask for bereavement for a doll that “died”—and get it.
