Think of aerobatics and it's fighter jets and light aircraft that spring to mind.

But the crowds at the recent Farnborough Airshow were treated to the sight of a new Rolls-Royce-powered LM100-J Hercules transport plane pulling outrageously nimble manoeuvres – including a loop.

The man at the controls was chief test pilot Wayne Roberts – and his stunt was caught on camera.

The engines on a -130 are turboprops.

AT-6s are carbureted and you have to pull through the loop at about 1 G or it will empty the bowl and start sputtering if you dawdle..

Nothing new?
While I was in RVN, often it seems they would do this sort of maneuver for the benefit of the passengers, especially during the monsoon.

The Crew Chief would check that all were buckled in and go up front and announce that some of the passengers were turning green, with some assistance they might barf!

And roll and loop we went, I think?

Around 1960 we watched a firepower demonstration at Eglin AFB. It lasted around 2 hours of almost continuous demonstrations.

One of the more interesting things was a C-130 came in low, landed in a field of scrub brush, reversed props and came to a stop. He then reversed them again and took off in the same field.

An ageless airplane, better than ever.

This ranks up there with Tex Johnson doing a barrel roll in a 707 for doing things with an airplane they are not supposed to be able to do.

Got to wonder how many G’s he pulled on the bottom of the loop, and how much the airframe is rated for.

Arguably. Some would advocate for the SR-71 or DC-3.

No argument that it's a close rate!

Engine must be fuel injected to do that kind of stuff.

Jet engines to power the props. They never built a piston engined C-130.

Lots of airplanes could make that claim.

The F-15 has the best combat record of any fighter. The B-52, even longer lived than the C-130. Maybe the P-51, tho I was surprised to read that a test pilot who had flown both the P-51 and the ME-109 said the Messerschmidt was the better fighter.

You’ve not heard of the T-34 Mentor? I believe that is a Bonanza 35 model modified for tandem seating.

It is for real. I have seen those things do hammerhead stalls, inside loops, outside loops, and barrel rolls. I have also seen one take off in its own length.

When empty, it is rally over-powered. It has a super-tough air frame.

After all of these years it is still the best transport plane in the world.

Dear God, it is a turbo-prop. Turbine engines are always fuel-injected. Those engines are extremely powerful.

That is bloody ASTONISHING. I love the C-130, it is a historic plane, but now I have seen everything.

If you had just told me without the video, I would not have believed it.

I am willing to bet there were a few people in that crowd, not in the know, that thought something had gone horribly wrong.

I watched this with my mouth hanging open.

Outside loops? I would have to see that to believe it. Not calling you a liar, but...that is simply something I would have to see with my own eyes!

LOL, I couldn’t give a hoot if it weren’t a “real” loop! Just seeing it go inverted was astonishing!

My old CAG commander landed one on a carrier many years ago!

...and getting buzzed by a B-1 moving low and fast.

I was out on the Hot Pad at Grand Forks AFB with my men as we unloaded a Minuteman III from a C-141.

Between the generators and the hydraulic winches running it was quite noisy, then the ground started to shake then there was a huge rumbling sound. My men let go of the winch buttons and ran away from the aircraft as they thought somehow the missile has come off the cradle inside the shipping container.

I remained and turned around to see two of our B-1B bombers fly over the runway about 150 feet off the ground with the wings swept back and full afterburner on. They pulled up nearly vertical and then roll over then towards the west.

They had just returned after winning the SAC Bomb Comp and were celebrating.

No fuel injection. The engines on C-131s are turboprops and always have been.
