Taxpayer-funded trip included a jaunt to Disney World

The Clark County School District sent Deanna Wright to an anti-bullying conference in Orlando. She went to Walt Disney World instead of attending the end of the conference.

Wright is the president of the School Board. Last year, taxpayers paid for her trip to the 2017 National Conference on Bullying. The conference opened on March 1 and ended at 11 a.m. on March 3.

On March 3, at 9:53 a.m. — while the conference was ongoing — she took an Uber from her hotel to a Disney World parking lot. Late that evening, she took another Uber from Disney World back to her hotel. That’s according to travel documents obtained by a public records request.

If you’re using taxpayer money to go to a conference, you should be at the conference, not taking off to an amusement park.

I’m going to Disney World...on the TAXPAYERS dime...She thought Mickey Mouse might have better anti-bullying advice.

I’ve been to these three day seminars. People mix business and pleasure. However, you need to pay for personal expenses, such as if you stay over in a resort an extra day for personal vacation.

It says that she left her hotel at 9:53, not the conference. It sounds like she blew off the whole last half day, slept in and went straight to Disney World.

Which is worse than skipping out an hour early.

Why the hell is an anti-bullying conference even needed——this could be handled locally?

uber, meals, lodging.

Should have been on her personal card. Lord knows if I did that in my job I’d have been rung up.

Oh, and stay an extra day and then you can do all the hookers and blow you want on your own dime.

The article picks at a lot of nits. While on official business, its not a crime to go out to eat at a location of ones choosing (keep costs within the per diem rate), or even to go out for personal entertainment (on ones own expense), but extending trips extra days, and including that as a business expense when it should be personal vacation is not ethical.

I will say its not unusual to stay over an extra evening as one is not required to have a workday go beyond 8-10 hours, and sometimes that late afternoon flight might result in a twenty hour day (I've done those with meetings on the east coast and then flying home to the west coast). But all in all, I think this person is either in trouble for more than this trip, or she pissed someone off and this is retribution.

typically conferences like that are at the hotel especially in Orlando
I am not excusing her
but to leave a conference on last day an hour early is not a huge deal.
The important seminars and talks would have already happened.
Her charging taxpayers is a big deal

Public Education and accountability are mutually exclusive. It was clearly for the children.
