Former Vice President Joe Bidens niece avoided jail on Thursday after a Manhattan Criminal Court judge sentenced her to two years probation for stealing more than $100,000 in a credit card scam.
Caroline Biden, 31, accepted the two-year probation sentence after she pleaded guilty in June 2017 to racking up $110,810 worth of charges on a borrowed credit card as she went on a shopping spree.
I not only acknowledge my conduct and take responsibility but deeply regret the harm caused, Caroline told Justice Curtis Farber at her Thursday sentencing, according to the New York Post. I can assure you that I have made amends, full restitution, completed community service and that nothing like this will ever happen again.
As part of the sweetheart deal, the judge tossed the felony count of grand larceny while she pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of petit larceny.
Bidens niece also completed ten days of community service at a childrens hospital, paid back the $110,810 she stole, and agreed to stay out of trouble as part of the deal.
Police arrested Caroline in May 2017 after she spent over $100,000 on purchases at Bigelow Pharmacy in New York with a stolen credit card between April 2015 and June 2016. Caroline asked the unnamed victim if she could borrow a credit card to make a $672 purchase.
Authorities initially charged her with grand and petit larceny and she initially pleaded guilty to both charges in exchange for two years probation.
The judge offered her a deal where she would plead guilty to both counts under the condition that she pay back the stolen money and stay out of trouble. In exchange for the guilty plea and the restitution, the judge agreed to drop the felony count of grand larceny.

See what you get for letting you ex-VP uncle feel you up.
Did she say -— “Do you know who I am??”
Special deals for well connected people. The blindfold on Lady Justice is a complete joke.
If she had the money for the restitution, why did she need to borrow the...
Never mind. My brain hurts.
Democrats get away with MURDER!
They would hang a Trump relative for the same offense.
Good question, I don’t know. Yes, something else is going on here inside her head.
I know of a distinguished lawyer with many years experience. He was picked up for shoplifting a book. After that was processed through the court, he did it again. He ended up in forced into retirement, lost his reputation, his license, wife divorced him, kids disowned him, a downhill spiral. He was suffering from mental illness (severe depression and bipolar). He now tries to help others who suffer from these diseases. I respect him for that and to do something positive with his life for others.
Other than being related biologically to Joe, this is not a happy day in their family. He isn’t responsible even for the court outcome, though her Biden background had to be a factor such that the judge probably weighed the ability to pay restitution, and the chance that it won’t happen again in determining the sentence. Next time it will be harder. Hang around a courthouse someday and you will see even the lowest classes in our society are more often than not given a 2nd chance. The repeat offenders ...well that is a different tune.
Finally, what it shows is that these types of things - mental illness and/or criminal behavior can come from any level in society. While I have a lot to criticize Old Joe about, I don’t blame him here. I don’t blame the judge either as I wasn’t sitting in the courtroom.
How has she taken responsibility for what she did? She didn’t at all.
The Biden family has a unique relationship with the law. Slow Joe insists (falsely) that a truck driver was drunk when his former wife died in an accident. He then encourages people to shoot a shotgun in the air to foul a burglar. He also had his son, AG Beau Biden, trump up charges against Larry Sinclair, and have him extradited from a news conference in DC to Delaware....just before Slow Joe is namex as Soetoro’s Veep. Now the niece gets special treatment. What a family legacy.
Just about every politician does this on the taxpayer’s credit card.
Different folks different dynamics. For some shop lifting is a thrill sport. These people will steal literally anything. Like the well off business owner whose wife couldn't figure out where all the odd sized men's cloths complete with store tickets that her husband generously donated to the church clothes closet were coming from. For some people it is a compulsion they can't explain. Years ago a engine maintenance USAF MSGT was found to have stolen more than half the parts for a jet aircraft engine, which he was assembling in his garage. He had first stolen a large array of specialized tools to do the job. His wife called his CO when she saw what was growing in the garage. The USAF was very good to this fellow, who was a model NCO and a truly outstanding aircraft engine man. He had to carefully disassemble his project and with assistance from his base shop return everything and then submit to a long stint of psychological counseling. The psych people were fascinated with the case but could find no particular stressor. The man came from a poor background and the Depression was harsh for him but as he said everyone was poor where he was from. He got to retire with his grade after completing counseling and returning all his acquisitions. The Security Police were also very interested in how he had gotten some large parts off the base.
If her last name was Jenkins.....
I'd love to know who this victim is.
How on earth does the credit card company not call you over these purchases?
Didn't the victim wonder why the monthly bills were so high?
Who has a credit card with >100K limit?
That’s quite a story.
Not finding a mental component (illness) raises a lot of other questions of course, quality of the evaluation presumed adequate. Also, wonder about his IQ, as poor people still understand the legal meaning of right/wrong, stealing, etc. Was he mentally capable to know right from wrong? Perhaps at the end of the day he was a thief who got his thrill from stealing, and used his personality to con people. When I hear of cases like this I remind myself ... those were the things he was caught with .... wonder what he wasn’t caught with... including money. His unit leader(s) obviously covered for him. Interesting case.
More than you would imagine. Many probably can't actually handle that kind of credit limit either.
