A leaked photo shows that China is building a supercarrier that could rival the US' Nimitz-class carriers
--
China has grand ambitions for a world-class navy, and is reportedly building two more aircraft carriers with enhanced capabilities that would make them among the world's most powerful navies. But it's unclear what China ultimately intends to do with them. Is it for prestige? To project power? To protect its interests overseas? We asked two naval experts to find out more.

Made with Chinese steel. If it lives down to its reputation catostrauphic failure ultimately will occur.
When a diverse college graduate receives a degree in Fluff Studies and a real college student earns a degree in Engineering, the engineer has something of value that leads to a real job and a real paycheck. The Fluff Studies graduate asks, “would you like fries with that”.
Similarly, building a ship with a large flight deck will not give the People Liberation Army Navy the aviation capabilities that we earned over 80+ years of flight operations. I’m not in any way worried about a PLAN carrier.
I love it that the article stated they asked naval experts what they thought. Brought to mind Elmo talking to Mr. Noodle and then asking Baby on Elmos World
So theyre making this target, BIG. Thanks China!
“......Similarly, building a ship with a large flight deck will not give the People Liberation Army Navy the aviation capabilities that we earned over 80+ years of flight operations. Im not in any way worried about a PLAN carrier.”
Exactly. It would take generations for china to build a “world class navy” being the men, not the machines. They are just building expensive targets.......
No doubt much of it is from espionage theft but yeah, will remain hype to me until built and tested.
Good for them... now if they could field a reliable aircraft for it. The J11s as bad copies of SU27/30 are falling apart and they are scrambling for a replacement such as their J35
The problem is while China doesn’t have the experience with carrier operations the US has, the “diversification” of the US military may tend to level the playing field.
The lack of commitment to the training of personnel by the previous Administration has led to some very serious errors by naval officers over the past couple of years. It was RARE to hear of ship-to-ship contact prior to the Obama years.
While I’m sure there were some incidents, it seems they happen more frequently now and without an Administration willing to commit resources to training, spare parts, and re-supply, this could impact operations of the US military for years to come. Plus, couple that with a continuing presence in the Middle East, the fatigue factor I would bet is pretty high right now.
I’m guessing these carriers are very expensive to make. And their economy depends on the US buying Chinese products....hmm...
That’s what they do, think long term.
The Chinese engineer will have cheated his way through school.
The trick is how good are the damage control features and the training of the crew in at sea repair. This is where the USN excels. You can tell how good a navy is by how seriously they take damage control.
At face value, I totally agree with you. Experience is the one thing you can only get by needing it when you don't have It. Having said that, the American value placed on human life has generally resulted in cautious development over those 80 years (perhaps a bit less so during the exigencies of wartime). The Chinese subscribe to the Stalinist theory of quantity having a quality all its own. They will expend as many aviator and flight deck crew lives as necessary to rapidly gain the experience and apply the lessons learned. As others have noted here as well, lessons the Americans have learned through trial and error, the Chinese will learn through espionage. So, yes, we have invaluable experience in nearly a century of naval aviation which the Chinese do not. But it will not take them a century to catch up.
"I've been to WalMart. I'm not worried about Chinese technology."
We're building the Space Force. I wonder what a "Rod from God" would do to a big, fat target like a super duper chinese carrier?
The discussion is focused on hardware.
The question that matters is how much do the young pilots and officers want to suceed? Motivation and repetative training can yield positive results as they learn.
