Top officials and intellectuals in China are awed by President Donald Trumps skill as a strategist and tactician, according to co-founder and director of the European Council on Foreign Relations Mark Leonard.
Writing in the Financial Times, Leonard reports that on a recent trip to China many of those he spoke to said that Mr Trump is the US first president for more than 40 years to bash China on three fronts simultaneously: trade, military and ideology.
The Chinese see Trump as rejecting the idea that U.S. leaders should be managing the relative decline of the U.S.
Leonard goes on to say that while China is taking a tough stance in its conflict with the U.S. now, many Chinese think that their leaders should rethink the strategy. Instead of confronting the U.S. and seeking to build an anti-U.S. coalition, China should prepare the ground for a new grand bargain with the US based on Chinese retrenchment.

prepare the ground for a new grand bargain with the US based on Chinese retrenchment.
I.e., win-win. Everyone leaves the table happy. Was that so hard?
The media will spin this to make him look bad, as usual. “Oh, look ... now he’s warming up to another communist dictator!”
The Chinese give our President more respect than many in this country.
A CFR member wouldn’t say that were it not true. He’d have no reason to and every reason to say the opposite. I was watching a Chinese-speaking white BBC reporter interviewing people headed to the Chinese Communist Party annual conclave and I got much the same impression.
Russia hasn’t been communist since about 1991. Do journalists even go to school?
WE really are awed - rightly so - but if ANY Chinese leader claimed it..?
I would call that an attempt to seduce and manipulate.
Let them be as awed as they CLAIM, all as TheDonald butt f*cks them.
Looks like the Chinese think they have Trump all figgered out.
Uh-huh...
Remember what they named Trump when he visited China?
Donald the Strong.
What do you think they named Zero?
Obama the girl.
The Chinese are merely assessing Trump in a rational manner.
Unlike our insane left and media here.
Too damn bad the Republicans are undermining him and helping China:

After dealing with Obama....A real President with Brains and real knowledge of the economy.
After the unremarkable IQs of the last couple of "presidents" it is not surprising.
Do you even have to ask that question?
Too bad our own people, be they demodummies or repubs don’t get it. They need to get behind the POTUS and move forward. They need to accept that he IS THE PRESIDENT even if they don’t like it. The rest of the world can see what a leader Trump is too bad half of America is too dumb to realize that he is doing a wonderful job. Everyday events and figures don’t lie!
“The Chinese give our President more respect than many in this country”... ..
At least he didn’t have to exit the rear end of the plane.
When the Chinese show such respect, they recognize who deserves it. I am totally disgusted with the American politicians of today, nothing but a bunce of thieves in suits. Talk about a swamp full.
President trump is projecting strength and my god, maybe the Chinese respect strength? No, we need more presidents like the Kenyan who grovel and Bow to foreign countries.
Managers are good at maintaining the status quo and leaders set new goals and convince followers to join the quest for them.
Trump is a leader. Reagan was a leader.
The Bushes and Clinton were managers.
Obama was a destructive force.
Ya know, his statement reminds me of the headlines of the North Korean news that used to be linked on Drudge.
Ya gotta hand it to the Chinese. They are smart, smart. They have fully grasped this embryonic cultural shift in America.
We've gone from Bill Clinton who gave thing much of the country away through NAFTA, to distracted company man in George W. Bush, to a weak President Obama who publicly sought to dismantle America both foreign and domestic, to Trump the strong.
I think the world is finally catching on that we are no longer going to tolerate Iran capturing our naval vessels, bowing low to other world leaders, signing climate agreements that completely emasculate our industrial infrastructure. Nope, it is a new day.
