Manafort judge deals blow to Mueller probe

A federal judge in Virginia agreed Monday to grant immunity to five potential witnesses in Paul Manafort’s upcoming trial — but, in a blow to special counsel Robert Mueller, said their identities would be made public.

Mueller’s team wanted the identities of their witnesses to remain confidential, saying in a filing last week that they haven’t been criminally charged and not naming them would avoid “undue harassment.”

But Judge T.S. Ellis, a Ronald Reagan appointee, said they would be identified.

He also ordered Mueller’s office to provide a list of about 30 witnesses to Manafort’s lawyers.

President Trump’s ex-campaign chairman was in court seeking a postponement of his financial fraud trial, which is scheduled to begin Wednesday

Huh. Funny how that crazy Fifth Amendment wore. I’m sure the ACLU will mount a campaign to put an end to it.

Secret "witnesses" and secret hearings and secret immunity deals and secret fill-in-the-blank subpoenas—what would our founding fathers say to all of this? A good judge would dismiss the star chamber PDQ.

How is “revealing” their names “a blow to Robert Mueller”? My first thought is a cynical one: that they must now be real people, not coached actors. But the Post can’t be thinking that.

I don’t accept “Mueller didn’t want the names released, but the names will be released, therefore HA HA MUELLER!” That’s no explanation at all.

Hardly a major blow.

...but a blow all the same. I salute this judge, Judge T.S. Ellis, for daring to do the right thing.

In the United States, the prosecution may grant immunity in one of two forms. Transactional immunity, colloquially known as "blanket" or "total" immunity, completely protects the witness from future prosecution for crimes related to his or her testimony.

What a disgrace Muller is.

You can add to that, secret evidence too, if memory serves.

This guy is a classic case of rogue prosecutoral actions.

I’m shocked some judge hasn’t stepped on this guy’s head yet.

Didn’t we engage in a 44 year long Cold war, as well as various hot wars, to put an end to societies that do this? In defense of ‘Democracy’, they seek to turn us into a totalitarian state.

Mueller expected to what, present secret witnesses wearing perhaps white hoods to hide their identity?

Secret “witnesses” and secret hearings and secret immunity deals...and secret courts and secret judges and manufactured evidence by one of the major political parties. Very very scary, isn’t it?

What are the chances that some of these witnesses, absent anonymity, refuse to testify or even show up?
