The Trump administration announced Tuesday that it will grant up to $12 billion in emergency aid to farmers hurt by retaliatory tariffs in the ongoing trade fight with China and other American trading partners.
Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue said that the plan, which will provide direct assistance and other temporary relief for farmers through the USDAs commodity program, is meant as a stopgap to give Trump time to negotiate a long-term policy with China, the European Union and others.
The plan was announced as Trump spoke at the Veterans of Foreign Wars national convention in Kansas City, where he urged patience in dealing with the tariffs and claimed that farmers will be the biggest beneficiary of the trade deals in the end.
Farmers will be the biggest beneficiaries, Trump told the crowd gathered inside Kansas Citys Municipal Auditorium. Were going to do something that has never been done.

Will this be over and above their subsidies to not grow certain crops?
I am all in for tariffs but subsidies not so much.
They already benefit from $172+ billion dollars in subsidies.

Tariffs will more than cover this. Im generally against subsidies, but this makes sense until the Chinese remove tariff on American goods.
“Will this be over and above their subsidies to not grow certain crops?”
Well, I for one, want our farmers to produce all they can and sell what they grow without regard to Canada. We need to put a big hurt on them for their trade policies. We can out produce them in grain crops, and we should do so. We should refuse to sell them dairy products with 200+% tariffs attached. It’s long past time when we realize that Canada is a leech attached to our country. It attempts to live off of us as a “host.”
What about the homebuilders who are facing higher lumber prices because of the tariffs on Canadian lumber? Are they going to get subsidies too?
YOU WILL SEE MORE FARMERS GO BROKE IN NEXT 2 YEARS LIKE NEVER BEFORE.....WAIT AND SEE
this may be necessary so I am glad PDJT is doing it, but let’s hope most of the subsidies (especially the ones to NOT GROW food!!!!) can be brought to a successful termination soon.
I trust the president.
This shows that tariffs are not free, they have significant costs. This is just the first round of such programs.
You can’t put a tariff on goods you SELL only on those you Buy.
12 Billion is pittance compared to what the Chicomms are screwing us with.
That really is the bottom line here. There is where Trumps pragmatism wins over rigid ideology.
$12 billion is a mere pittance. Obama gave our enemies a whole lot more.
Who cared about the MILLIONS of factory workers that have lost their jobs over the last 3 decades? No Republicans, that’s for sure.
Subsidies have nothing to do with tariffs. Nice try.
I agree with you but want to add this is pr. Trump is fighting all the doom coverage the msm throws out for farmers they otherwise would care less about.
Maybe we will see a return of domestic logging?
The whole reason for these subsidies is to offset the costs of the tariff on the farmers. I told you this damage would happen much to your “tariffs cost nothing” nonsense.
Prior subsidies had nothing to do with tariffs.
Don’t be duplicitous.
