South Korea says it plans to scale back the number of guard posts along its tense border with North Korea and withdraw some military equipment. The move comes amid talks with the U.S. over how much Seoul should pay for its own defense.
The announcement comes as an expert on North Korea's weapons program reports that Pyongyang has begun dismantling key facilities at a satellite launching station in fulfillment of a pledge by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un last month at the Singapore summit with President Trump.
In a report on Tuesday, South Korea's defense ministry apprised a parliamentary committee of its plans to reduce some guard post troops and equipment as a preliminary test of the agreement made at the Koreas summit in April and that it would consider expanding the effort to "transform the demilitarized zone into a peace zone," according to the Yonhap news agency....

Whoa. Big news. ROKs wouldn’t do this unless they had reason.
B-But it’s treason! Trump meeting with world leaders is treason!
I’ll be an outlier here. Korea can unite without us. A united Korea will be a strong, successful nation without our having to protect them.
P R E M A T U R E
I disagree
This is how it should be done.
We’re NOT “protecting” Sokor. My cuz’ serves at Red Cloud and the only reason why we are there is to checkmate China. Ask any service member in Sokor, any base and they will laugh at this protect Korea crap.
Same here. I dont trust them. Premature is right.
And if the Norks do try to pull something, Kim and the the high brass are gone, Trump isn’t going to put up with it. And I think they know that.
Not the South.
When the North starts withdrawing, then...
Well Yes, that's true. But currently, we have a “armistice agreement” with North Korea that doesn't involve SK at all. It overrides anything the two Koreas do right now. As to unification, who runs the combined country? The democratic South or the Communist North? So It will be a wonderful thing if and when it happens, but until that time, WE ARE INVOLVED whether we like it or not.
Thanks. On this one we’ll have to disagree.
Kim hasn’t done much of anything yet.
I’m excited about the prospect for peace and reunif., but I hope they move cautiously with verification of Nk promises.
I consider that a good thing
He isn’t threatening the world, threatening to nuke us or anyone else
He is dismantling, not at the pace we all want, but something IS getting done.
Kim knows Trump will take him out, Trump isn’t CIA so Kim being an “asset” is over.
“Whoa. Big news. ROKs wouldnt do this unless they had reason.”
You don’t know the South Korean Leftist president Moon, and have no idea what his motives might be. My guess is it is being done at his command, for political motives, and over the heads the ROK military.
Thanks for the response.
The one thing we do not want is a war in Korea at this point.
I would do nothing to make Kim think we were letting our guard down.
Lets approach this thoughtfully, and not as pie in the sky children.
I didn’t mean that as an attack on you. I’m thinking of those who devise policy
Were NOT protecting Sokor. My cuz serves at Red Cloud and the only reason why we are there is to checkmate China. Ask any service member in Sokor, any base and they will laugh at this protect Korea crap.
THIS is the sign. This makes the whole thing real.
If nothing else, it is a show of good faith that SK doesn’t intend NK any harm.
I realize that we’re there to keep China scutinized, just as the real reason for VN was to keep China held back from marching on to Thailand, Indonesia, even Australia. A united Korea will serve that function without our help. It’s not like Europe which seems to have depleted and now degrades its DNA beyond repair.
