At least 60 people have died in wildfires in the Attica region around Athens, in Greece's worst fire disaster in more than a decade.
Flames fanned by strong winds devastated the seaside village of Mati, devouring homes and cars.
Rescuers found the bodies of 26 adults and children who had apparently hugged each other as they died, trapped by the inferno just metres from the sea.
Many calls have been made to the rescue services looking for missing persons.

From the article:
What caused the fires?
“Fifteen fires had started simultaneously on three different fronts in Athens,” said government spokesman Dimitris Tzanakopoulos.
Greece, he added, had requested drones from the US to “observe and detect any suspicious activity”.
Very, very tragic. One story said there was a group of 20 people who huddled together knowing they were about to die and in fact were consumed by the fire.
Yes, it seems like arson is a real possibility here.
That’s so sad.
What kind of idiot dies in a fire just meters from the sea? When the choice is ‘burn or drown’ I would rather swim.

Arson. 15 fires on three fronts simultaneously. Isn’t diversity grand.

They’re not idiots. They just couldn’t make it to the sea fast enough. You have no idea how fast these wildfires move.
Maybe you should rethink your statement. A little more knowledge of the situation on your part would help.
A wall of fire between them and the sea? Not bare rock or sand, apparently.
There are a few neo-Nazi groups in Greece. And I suppose they have their share of anarchists. But why would any of them deliberately start massive, simultaneous fires?
Maybe as a false-flag operation. But in this day and age, it’s hard to hide such a thing for long. Everyone knows that. So if this horrible event was really arson, I wouldn’t think it was caused by home-grown crazies.
If I remember correctly, the last outbreak of fires in Greece was attributed to Muslims. Looking now for info.
I wondered the same thing.
What a confusing mess (arson in Greece). The Wikipedia article you linked to seems to imply that the 2007 fires were set simultaneously as a way to clear land.
Well, OK. The Greek government knows far more than I do. But setting those fires would have taken a certain level of coordination, more I would not have expected from people who just wanted to clear land.
(Disclaimer: Due to my jaded nature, I tend to see conspiracies everywhere. And I’m often right.)
BBC said it’s a very green area with summer homes and tons of people at them
There is one group in particular known for such arson yet you’re searching for stereotypical leftist bogeymen, why? Is the reflex to not blame the group in particular known for such arson that strong? Why are you afraid to say it’s Islamic terrorism? The likelihood is very high that it was.
