PORTLAND, Ore. – A local non-profit food cart in Southwest Portland say they have been forced to close due to alleged harassment and threats coming from protesters across the street at Occupy ICE.
The Happy Camper is run by Scott and Julie Hakes. They use the food cart to raise money for their non-profit organization, Operation Off The Grid, which helps the homeless around Portland.
“It's our passion due to the fact that Julie and I were both homeless in our past,” said Scott. “We had always said that if we ever get to the point where we could give back, we would.”
The stand is across the street from the Portland U.S. Immigration, Customs and Enforcement (ICE) facility, where protesters are holding a weeks-long demonstration and calling for the abolishment of ICE.
As the occupation enters its sixth week, Hakes says enough is enough.
It started several weeks ago when Hakes says protesters were yelling at his daughter. Hakes provided KATU News with video showing someone from the camp across the street yelling at his daughter with a megaphone.
“She’s laughing at the immigration laws that have f****d over families,” said the unidentified protester.
In the video, Hakes daughter says, “Do you hear them? They think I’m laughing at them. So now they are targeting us now.”
“Boom - there it went. We were on the number one hit list from that point on,” said Hakes.
Since then, Hakes says protesters have harassed his customers. Business went down 80 percent...

Now if this ‘charity’ is being run like the Clinton Foundation, it may be good they are being targeted BUT what the Clintons do is OK in the protestors minds?

Very nice food cart. Not what I expected.
The “protesters” behave this way because their lives are empty and meaningless. They try for relevance in this behavior, but will never find it. The irony that they will never understand is that if they would emulate the people they target, they could find that sense of self-worth that so clearly is lacking.
If I ever mention that I’m going to Portland....

That looks more like a fixed building than a cart. If it was a cart, they could move it to a new location.

Help me out here. I do not understand, they are giving free food the homeless and the left is putting them out of business? They are helping homeless why are they putting them out of business?
If it’s a non-profit, why do they care if business is down 80%? It just means they don’t have to work as hard to make no money.
Because they still need to make enough to cover their operating costs. Whatever is leftover is donated.
