Manafort judge deals blow to Mueller probe

A federal judge in Virginia agreed Monday to grant immunity to five potential witnesses in Paul Manafort’s upcoming trial — but, in a blow to Special Counsel Robert Mueller, said their identities would be made public.

Mueller’s team wanted the identities of their witnesses to remain confidential, saying in a filing last week that they haven’t been criminally charged and to avoid “undue harassment.”

But Judge T.S. Ellis, a Ronald Reagan appointee, said they would be identified.

He also ordered Mueller’s office to provide a list of about 30 witnesses to Manafort’s lawyers.

Rush said a few weeks ago that the judge should have thrown the case out.

Hmm...secret testimony, secret surveillance, secret witnesses, sealed indictments, and people in solitary confinement without a trial - all this brought to you by the Party of Transparency. I can hardly wait to see what comes next.

Would Mueller drop the charges under this order or will he seek a different ruling from a more “accommodating” judge?

I think the constitution is quite clear on this one. You get to face your accusers. If they let the government bring in secret people to testify then whats the difference between our government and Putin’s.

Good grief! What was that Constitution Amendment VI thingy "In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to ...to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defence."

What does this judge think he is doing allowing Manafort his constitutional rights.

He is stuck with the judge he has got. He could file a petition for writ of mandate to the court of appeals, but it's hard to see that the judge has overstepped his discretion in ordering that the names of witnesses be released [Manafort's 6th amendment right].

And Mueller could appeal and have the case restored and under a more accommodating judge next time. The problem is that this is all pretrial and so no irredeemable error has occurred.

So I get to see Tony Podesta conspire with Mueller to convict his business partner of crimes they both committed?

That’s lower than whale sh!t.

Manafort being in solitary confinement for 23 hours per day.

“What a coincidence, more DEMOCRATS getting immunity.”

There’s a theory floating around that the purpose of the Mueller probe was never to get Trump, but rather to provide a pretext for granting immunity to Obama appointees.

It’s never been a witch hunt - it’s a whitewash, a massive cleanup operation.

Clever, really. Any Obama minion at risk for being implicated in Spygate or any other of Obama’s many nefarious dealings and abuses need only get himself on Mueller’s witness list and be granted immunity.

We’ve been played.

At this point in time Putin’s is more honest and fair.

As I have said many times, this is not an investigation, it is a massive cover up!

Mueller didn’t want the names of the Democrat Deep State criminals released to the public, because the public will be able to easily tell this is a cover up, when all these immunity deals start flying left and right!!

Meuller has been Judge Shopping for several months via various Motions. Now it is put up or shut up. Meuller may be looking to dump the case as these witnesses would be his only chance at a conviction. Meuller indicted Manafort without thinking this thru. Manafort is probably not in lock up. He is probably sitting in the CatBird Seat. Meuller sure ran a great con! On himself!

One other issue is that Mueller has to say what exactly they might have done illegal-wise, and offer immunity against that single episode.

If you get into the middle of this and some money appears to have changed hands in a major way (avoiding taxes), then someone else can come up and detain them for other crimes. You pretty much need to write out every single answer possible and memorize it and refuse to say something that might get you deeper into some mess.
